DK45 glow plugs

I have found out, the stupid way I guess, DO NOT use a cross reference guide to but GP's for a kioti. I bought an NGK CY51 for my dk50c, while it LOOKS "close enough" the end of the threaded part has the sealing seat for the cylinder head.

The NGK was not seating....

Secap04,
Great information. I have a DK 45 with front loader. It is a 2000 model... I love the tractor, but have been getting very slow starts with temp in the 50's and even the 60's. In fact yesterday, almost never got it to run. It was inside my shop, which was a little warmer than outside. Sounded like not hitting on all cylinders, and smoking like crazy.

Checked the strip over top of plugs, and it seems to be hot with 12v as it should be. Thought about just purchasing (4) new glow plugs to stop chasing the problem. Your thoughts!

Thanks,
Hollis

Hollis,

If you are up for more checking you might (1) verify a good 12V on that strip both with the key in preheat and also while cranking and (2) if you have an ammeter (about 20 amp range) you might measure the current through each plug with the key turned to glow. As a less-good alternative you can try to measure the resistance of each plug.

My key switch got wonky and shut off the glow voltage when turned to the crank position. But sometimes it would "catch" just as I released the key back to the run position. A switch cleaning & lube produced a 100% fix.

The Kioti glow plugs for these things ain't cheap so it's worth checking them before forking over he cash, IMO.

Hollis, welcome to TBN.

Another way, though not as good as Ritcheyvs', is to remove the plugs and hook them back up to the circuit and turn on preheat for a few seconds. This will tell you if they are heating up or not. It will not tell you how well they are working. Just another thought, have you changed your fuel filter lately?

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Thanks to everyone!

Did not try a fuel filter... can do! Just because the tractor runs great, does not miss, performs flawlessly once cranked, thought it could not be the fuel filter. A friend told me to change the battery, maybe the battery is not delivering the amps needed for glow plugs to heat up properly. Had a NON crank with the tractor about 1 year ago... cleaned battery post, and cables, then overnight 2amp charge. Same battery is still in use???

If your tractor runs fine under load your fuel filter is fine. It was just a thought.

Thanks for "every" thought at this time.

I am going to change the filter anyway! I still believe there are glow plug issues, and maybe even a "micro" open circuit in the strip (rail) between 3 and 4. Last time I used the test light, voltage was on plug (1) near the firewall, plug (2), and (3), but I could not get a light by touching the threads of plug (4)???? However, three glow plugs should start the tractor even when temp is in low 50's or high 40's.

Guess the connection on plug (4) could be bad??

I have now installed a new battery, spins the engine faster, but did not totally solve the problem. Before all this started, you could easily start the engine at or slightly above idle.... now I have to increase the throttle quit a bit for starting. Even when starting the engine around idle or a little higher, I have always warmed the engine up at around 1200-1400rpm.
Thanks for the help,
Hollis

Seacap04,
Thanks for all the help!! I started replacing parts to finally solve the situation. Replaced all four glow plugs... only one checked good, and was working. While into it I decided to replace the buss strip, and fuel filter just to try and cover all bases.

My DK45 cranks after about ONE revolution of the engine... If it was 30 degrees right now I would bet the engine would start... maybe with a little longer glow heat, but would start.

Thanks to everyone!

Hollis, glade all is back working as it should. Any info I provided is pay back for the info I have received from this site. Post anything you learn from your tractor on this site so others can learn.

Good luck, Don
