Do Dealers EVER Sell Used Machines?

/ Do Dealers EVER Sell Used Machines? #31
I presume the OP was talking or asking about "Brand" line dealers like JD, NH, Kubota, etc.

Having been around equipment most of my life and never buying a new tractor I would have to say that the dealers in my area sold used. Majority of the tractors we bought where from the dealer that sold them new.

I purchased my BX used from the local Bota dealer also. In this area there a few implement dealers that specialize in used equipment with no big name brand line. I would suspect you will find dealerships like this in most areas.

Not at all true. You will always get 10-20% more selling privately than trading.

How many new tractors have you bought and how many used tractors have you sold? Probably zero, right.

Yup, zero. Guess you are just a wheeler-dealer tractor buyer/seller.

I am witnessing this with my current dealings.

The dealers are offering by buddy about 10% less than private sale value. Then they ask about 10% more than private sale value. This makes sense.

My contention: New machine is $40k. Expected USEFUL life is 2000 hours. Why is a 1300 hour machine worth $25k? It seems to me that some of the used market is artificially inflated. If that wasnt the case...these machines wouldn't be sitting around for MONTHS to YEARS.

I have been shopping for a used Kubota for close to 6 months at this point. I have consistently seen the EXACT SAME machines for sale at the SAME dealers for 6 months. Every time I inquire about the machines the dealers say "we are open for offers, but truly the machine is worth the asking price". If that is the case...wouldn't the machine SELL?

What's the deal?

Do the dealers hold onto used units because they artificially inflate resale value?
"Buy this new one, it is only a few thou more than that used one...and in 5 years it will only lose a few thou in value."

The machines I have been looking at all appear to be stagnant in the same price range and are in reasonable driving distance of me. It would appear that if one dealer would drop price a few k, they could sell easily.

Thoughts?

Yes, I think you pretty much understand the game.
Part of it is to support the myth that THEIR brand has very high resale value.
Part of it is to upsell you into "new and improved", "latest and greatest"; translation "thinner and lighter", "manufacturing cost reduced", "less metal, more plastic".

New machines are often financed by the manufacturers and have a carrying cost known as the floor plan, i.e. the dealer is paying interest on a loan to have those new machines sitting there depreciating, they are at risk of becoming last year's models, etc.

The trade ins are close to flat on their depreciation curves, if they sell to a first time naive buyer - WOW ! a straight fat profit right on the top (-:

So, Craig's List is an option, you can use Search Tempest to find CListings within whatever you regard as a convenient radius of your zip code - and you won't be sucked into upsell.
A lot of the time you will be dealing with amateurs.
I use the term charitably, i.e. folk who have little or no more selling experience than you have buying experience and don't know if they should accept your first offer, make a counter offer, etc.
You MIGHT be looking at something that is a day or a week away from repo, so be sure that you can get clear title - whatever that is in your jurisdiction.
If you can offer ca$h for the outstanding debt - well, this is all part of "feeling out" the seller, you might be able to get the answers you need and decide to buy "through" the finance company.... details, details,,,

E-Bay has it's problems, I see it as a way to pay more for something than anyone else thinks it is worth - but that is my general view of auctions anyway.
With e-bay you get the chance to pay more than anyone else in THE WORLD (almost, lets just say a much wider circle than a physical auction house normally draws in ?) thinks it is worth.
Wadda way to "WIN" (-:

WONDERFUL for sellers, but BAD for buyers - especially if/when they get caught up in a bidding fever.

If you're buying a 40K machine and it's useful life is 2000 hours, it's not a very good machine.

If you're buying a tractor at 40k, it should sure have a useful life of about 8,000 hours without too much trouble.

Used equipment is a whole different ballgame. Each piece is unique. 2 tractors, side by side, same model, same hours, even same owner, could have 2 totally different values.

Yes, some dealers hold machines longer to get top dollar. Some hold for a set time then start to unload. Some just don't want used equipment. Depends how their business is setup.

Though some manufacturers do supplement some "changeover" or "conversion" sales, Too much inventory new or used doesn't help the dealer or manufacturer.

In complete agreement, we fully expect to have our M8540 the rest of our lives to be used by our kids and grandkids.

We still have a 55 Ford my dad bought new and my brother uses it regularly as well as a mid 60's Case 995.

The Hour rating of the machines is way too low for the lifetime expectations of a tractor.. You can get 2000 hours without a lot of extra problems if it is a good design and quality. 10,000 hours have been run up on many of them. Hour meters have been broken on a lot of them before they make it to a dealer..Usually you can tell by appearance of a cherry or a dogged out machine.

I am happy to hear that the machines have much more life than I originally expected. I guess I got a bad impression since most machines seem to be under 1k hours around these parts (both geographic and "forum").

If I can expect 4k hours from a machine...than saving $15k for 500 hours is even that much more appealing!
