Do/Did you let your under aged kids drink alcohol?

I guess rtimgray detests me because I really do drink beer for the taste; and prefer the dark brown, nutty, opaque ales with a strong head. (My all time favorite is a beer brewed in Belgium called Chimay. I've seen it here in the States, but it doesn't taste exactly the same as it does in Belgium - probably doesn't travel well.) And yes, the alcohol sensation on the tongue and sides of your mouth are an active component to the taste. I abhor the taste of O'Douls; cow urine tastes better. (I grew up working on a dairy farm so I have the misfortune of actually being able to compare the two.) Learn to keep your mouth shut when walking behind cows.
I quite like the taste of Chimay as well. I've taste O'Douls, but not have the dubious pleasure of cow urine.

Our family has been lucky in that there are no known alcoholics on either side of the family. A horse thief yes, but no alcoholics.;)

I don't doubt that the presence of alcohol in a beverage alters the taste of it; I'm assuming that wine doesn't taste like grape juice - certainly doesn't smell that way. I'm not gonna get bent outta shape for people drinking beer or other alcohol, so long as they do it responsibly. At least the good Dr admit's that the alcohol content of the beer has to do with his enjoyment of the beverage - that's fine - at least your being honest about it.

Good luck and take care.

From what I recall of my friends and acquaintances back before we were of legal age to drink, the ones that were allowed to have a limited amount to drink in their homes seemed to handle alcohol much better later in life than the ones who were never allowed any consumption of alcohol until after they were of legal age.
I agree. We always on holidays let my son have a very small glass of what ever wine was being served at the big gathering or dinner. When he was very little he got the non alcoholic wine or sparkling juice, he thought he was part of the party and he was. He's now a Apache helicopter pilot. I continue this with my grandson. When the men go out to grill with a beer, he has a very special root beer, while not alcoholic he is learning to drink responsibly even though he doesn't realize there's a learning process going on for him. He just knows he only gets the brewed root beer on special occasions with the men. HS

And just to clarify, I don't feel that anyone owes me (or anyone else) an explanation as to why the choose to engage in a perfectly normal, legal activity such as drinking alcohol. Hope it didn't come across that way.

No, I don't drink and I don't want to train my children to. We have had friends and family die from alcohol abuse so we don't need the risk of introducing our kids to that.

Nope!

(the exclamation point was simply to get my note to the required 5 characters :) )

Yes. My daughter is 19 and her sister is 22. I allow a glass of wine to be consumed by the younger as I did with her sister. In my home. In my presence. Both grandmothers had problems with alcohol - serious problems. I want to demystify the whole "drinking" thing for them. And, we talk about the history of alcoholism in the family so they know that there's a line between social drinking and problem drinking.

It's kind of funny, the 22 year old will nurse a drink longer than anyone I know. Which is just fine with me.

Most friends that were denied any alcohol at home were the worst lushes while those that learned to enjoy the odd beverage with family on occasions went on to be responsible social drinkers.
I am pleased to say that my daughter is raising my granddaughters the same way. So far so good.

I guess I was about 3 sitting in my Dad's lap and decided I was going to drink his beer and he said OK...

That one instance cured my desire for beer because I got sick from the big gulp.

Last summer I had two girls visiting from Austria... one just turned 18 and the other turned 18 on the visit.

They both graduated from a gastronomy school and wine was part of it.

So, here are two young ladies that were taught all about wine and cooking starting at age 16 in a public school.

It only makes me think it's not the alcohol as much as society...

PS... over the weekend I attended a graduation party for a young man soon to go off to college... he was accepted at multiple schools including Harvard.

At the party his Mom and Dad said how proud they are of him and his accomplishments and then the Dad made a toast to his son and handed him a bottle of beer... Mom gave that you know what look and he had a sip... later he said the gesture from his Dad really meant a lot.

That is exactly what I saw with my friends and classmates.
