Do honey bees nest in ground?

Interesting, Richard. I can't answer either, but every spring, I have some small bee-looking crits that make holes in the ground, coming in and out. I can't figure out what they are. They leave little tufts of dirt piled around their holes, and are very passive; I walk all over them with no problem. Probably not what you are seeing, but I would really like to know what you saw.

From what I know, and the book I have, Bumble Bees establish colonies underground and are "peaceful and efficient gathers of nectar and pollen, much too busy to bother anyone unless their nests are disturbed." (Straight from the book....)

Probably true. The only time I got stung by bumble bees was when harvesting okra and actually bumped or got hold of one accidentally. As long as I was careful to not touch them, they always left me alone.

Even swatting at bumble bees is likely just to move them out of the way. Not to say they won't respond, but the are the most indifferent bee I have ever seen. There are strains, some a little more reactive than others, but non comes close to any wasp or honeybee that I know of.

Alright everyone now, can we say " Bumble Bees are our friends?" on three....1...2...

I am new to the board but thought I would respond to this question because I saw last summer what looked to be a honey bee hive in an old coyote den. I was on foot about 300 yards from my vehicle when I stumbled across them. This surprised me because I have never seen them nest this way before. I would have been in trouble if they were africanized and had gone after me. Didn't hang around long and just got out of the area as quickly as possible. Could have been a serious situation.
