Do I dare mix vegetable oil into my diesel fuel??

My college roomate tried to make an automated system for making this stuff. It was very complicated, required alot of nasty controled substances and had to be done at exact measures and proper temperatures. He said it did work, but the exaust smelled like food.

The process of turning vegetable oil into a diesel fuels substitute (biodiesel) is a bit complicated, but is only required when you want to run 100% vegetable oil based fuels. Some vehicles, as has been noted, can run straight vegetable oil. I would have zero concerns (and I am a naturally paranoid type of person) dumping a half gallon to a gallon of vegetable oil in a tank of diesel in my f350. I would have even less concerns running up to 10:1 diesel:wesson in my kubota. Its fuel injector system is a heck of a lot less complicated than the one in my truck.

Don't waste it, just toss it in the fuel tank and burn it. Though, I will agree, don't do it in the winter or when temperatures are routinely coolish..

With less than 20% SVO (straight veggie oil, also called WVO waste veggie oil) you should have no problems other than the lye in the veggie oil cleans your fuel system very quickly and clogs fuel filters quicker. for the first times you dump SVO in, you should have a spare filter around, it's the same as when you add the fuel additive to kill the microbes that live in diesel.

The above link is totally devoeted to this and is very helpful. Many of the people here are against turning the SVO into Biodiesel because of the special care and careful storage needed to separate the lye out, and also to dispose of the lye.

I say go ahead and start with 5-10% and try it out for yourself, some guys at thedieselstop.com are running 100% biodiesel on fairly new machines, it mostly depends on how hot the fuel is when it reaches the combustion chamber. Very very few of them experienced any significant loss of power or economy, if at all. I hope you try it, with a spare fuel filter handy, and tell us how it worked out for you.

I heard it works pretty good, just the catch is to pre-heat the veggie oil before it goes into the injectors.

Junkman...... I'm with Frank F15, not in my tractor. I don't know enough about it (although did learn alot from this post... thanks for the question) to trust it. I think Frank F15 did offer to subsidize repair/tune-up costs if you decided to try it /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
