I am currently hauling a JD 3320 on a 18ft utility trailer. Should I use 5/16 or 3/8 G70 transport chains? The tractor itself weighs about 3000lbs. However, I have loaded rear tires, a FEL and always have some type of attachment on the rear (5ft rotary cutter, etc). Is the 5/16 enough?

i believe the 3/8 chain is rated at 6000 pounds. not sure about the 5/16

The Working Load Limit (WLL) for Grade 70 Transport Chain is 6600 lbs. for 3/8" and 4700 lbs. for 5/16", according to a chart I downloaded from a chain supplier. Sorry, don't have the link:( but I got it by googling.:)

So far, it sounds like 5/16 grade 70 on all four corners will be more than adequate for this tractor. The total weight with FEL, 3pt attachment, etc should never exceed 6k lbs

The total WLL has to equal HALF the weight of what you are strapping down.

But you need a minimum of two chains (straps, whatever) for vehicles under 10,000lbs

so two 5/16 G70 with appropriate rated hooks and binders will be PLENTY.

Pg 102 is the statement "Use at least two tiedowns at both the front and rear of the cargo to prevent movement."

I believe you are correct, wheeled vehicles require 4 chains/4 binders. There are many other posts on this topic.

To answer the original question 5/16" will be plenty.
