Re: Do I Need to \"Get A Life\"?????

Two things I really love about my job......

Writing $100 handicap parking tickets to folks like her. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Calling Dept. of Social Services on folks like her for leaving kids in cars. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

You should have "gotten a life" and got the tag number and called DSS. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Would DSS (or whatever it's called here) do something after the fact if just a regular citizen calls it in? I would think they'd want to have someone "in authority" witness the occurrenece before moving on something like this.

As far as the illegal parking in the handicapped stall goes, I believe it's just a matter of time before a person like this gets caught. Yes, I would hope my comments would make the person reconsider parking in a reserved spot in the future, but I seriously doubt it. the only thing that will ultimately break a person like this is when they get caught and end up paying a fine. THEN they might stop doing it.

In our area, we do have a group of concerned citizens (vigilantes as she put it) that do watch for violators and report them. I believe they've been fairly succesfull, so hopefully they're efforts will start making an impact. And yes, they would also report seeing children being left unattended in the vehicle.

Re: Do I Need to \"Get A Life\"?????

My comments were certainly not serious & I hope not thought of as such, after posting I realized I could have offended & I do hope not.
People like that woman are too self important to let such things as inconveniencing those in true need & endangering a child (hers? maybe not!) get in her way. I believe your actions were apropriate & all that was needed. Reporting her to authorities may end up a waste of time as she most likely could be gone when they arrive. I see young healthy people park in the fire lane in front of the store all the time, the extra steps from a parking space is more than they feel is required of them. As for leaving the child in the car, she obviously doesn't value life other than her own much. I wonder if she has pets at home? I'm willing to bet if she has a dog it's tied to a tree, more as a living (suffering) lawn ornament than a friend, as they all should be.
Sorry to carry on, I'll get off my soap box.
regards, TW

Re: Do I Need to \"Get A Life\"?????

I have a handicap plate and use it legitimately six or so days a year when parking. Whenever I can, I parl as close as I can and leave open the handicap as there are people in much worse shape than I am.. You did absolutely the right thing, I would have yelled to her afet her little "get a life commment" that "home alone" and young babies IS a big problem. Perhaps the embarrassment would have straightened her out some..

1. Yes
2. No. Anyone can make that complaint. You witnessed it and could put a time frame on it. What she did falls in the "child neglect" and "child endangerment" part of their investigations.

In another post, what "croc man" did also falls in those categories.

I don't think you need to "Get a Life", I think you already have one, and it is wonderful.

All it takes for evil to win is for the good people to be silent.

Re: Do I Need to \"Get A Life\"?????

Garry, as far as I'm concerned, you sure didn't do anything wrong, but unfortunately you got exactly the kind of response I would expect from a person who would do what she did. If she doesn't care about the parking rules & regulations and isn't very concerned about her children or other people. . . , well, you can't really expect a reasonable response from a person already known to be unreasonable.

Re: Do I Need to \"Get A Life\"?????

You could have done like my daughter and her boyfriend did when they saw a baby locked in a car on a 90+ degree day. They smashed the window, rescued the kid, and called the cops. The mother left the site in handcuffs and her car was towed away.

That made her five minute time savings really worth while.

Re: Do I Need to \"Get A Life\"?????

Gary,

You did the right thing. If one would have known what this lady was going to say to you it would make you think the best thing would have been to turn her in. She was the fool here not you. If I would have been there to hear the whole thing I would have been applauding you outloud and I personally think others would have joined in.

Re: Do I Need to \"Get A Life\"?????

Actually, I did think of doing that. But two things intervened.

The first was that it wasn't that hot or that cold, and with my luck, because there were no extreme temperatures involved I probably would've ended up being arrested for destruction of private property! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

The second was my wife, The Voice of Reason. When she sees me getting a little upset, she very successfully "talks" me down. Like - YOU DO THAT AND I'LL NEVER SPEAK TO YOU AGAIN!! /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

But if she hadn't been around..............
