Is it me, or does anyone else see some irony in this picture? Interestingly enough, I was talking to the Sheriff the other day and he was flabbergasted that they (TVA) allowed hunting and hiking on same trails. He told me that just across the lake, it was strictly prohibited (hunting was strictly prohibited once the hiking trail was installed).

He just shook his head figuring one of two events might unfold... first, that someone gets hurt. Second, that no one shows up anymore. His logic on the second scenario is the hikers don't show up for fear of being shot, and the hunters don't show up for fear of shooting a hiker.

This trail is in the finishing stages "today". This sign just went up last Thursday or Friday. I find it intersting with the intent of drumming up some interest, they'd make this hiking trail, put the signs up, install signs 5 miles away on the road with directions on how to get here, just in time for the fall colors to change (nice hiking time perhaps?) and hand in hand, have this go on while hunting season is gearing up /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Call me stupid, but I just don't see how these two activities can "safely" co-exist on the same tract of land.

I agree with you. Doesn't seem to be very logical, does it? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You should send that picture in to Jay Leno on the Tonight Show. He'd probably show it when he does the bit about funny ads/signs/notices. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Simple, just bring a firearm during hunting season.

To give a birds eye, here is a map of same area. If you notice on top of map, is a large lake cove and at the bottom, is another large cove.

This "penuinsula" is what I live on. The farm is most of the green to the right of the vertical line above the word "Coytee Branch". You will notice that the line goes vertical and then near "Glendale branch" the line cuts to the right.

The left side of that line is TVA land, the right side of that is the farm.

As you can perhaps see, there is a dark line along the waters edge. This dark line is the walking trail. Across the lake is a fancy schmancy retirement community. About mid way down, you will see the property line is VERY close to the water and at other areas there is plenty of elbow room.

With some of the proxmity of property lines on one side, water on another, hunters shooting, hikers hiking and campers camping... I cant help, but to think this is just an accident waiting to happen.

I love having TVA as a neighbor /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I can easily immagine hikers that also hunt /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif If you are walking in the woods hunting, you are "hiking" right? I can also imagine hoards of animal rights activists packing the area during hunting season to prevent hunting, and getting away with it by claiming they are "hiking".

Yeah, it would be great on Leno. The only thing it is missing is the addition of the sign "Welcome to Tennessee, the home of Al Gore", or whatever that sign says. Now if that sign was on the same pole, it would be a true winner for the Leno show!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Looking at JUST what's on the signpost, here's my take on it.

The small sign tells me not to take any kind of vehicle in there, be it truck, atv, snowmobile or whatever. The other speaks for itself.

That having been said, the fact that hiking trails are put in there and advertised with no restriction on use during hunting season seems like a recipe for disaster.

Be sure to wear a regulation orange vest during the short hunting season, it is the law.

Hunters are hikers, and hikers should know that hunting is going on. Seems putting in hiking trails and not allowing hunting is "anti-hunting". I don't go for that. If the hikers want to see and experience the 'country' then it comes with hunters at certain times. To me, chances of getting hurt are greater driving in the car to get to the trails than being on the trails themselves while a hunter or two are around.
Could advise the hikers to wear proper clothing, and, or wear tinker bells while they hike.
Just my one "vote"!

Be sure to wear a regulation orange vest during the short hunting season, it is the law.

Is it? I mean it is common sense to do so and I do if I go into the woods during hunting season...but...for hikers?

I thought it was just hunters that were required to wear the orange...makes sense to do so for anyone going into the woods...but do I HAVE to? If I am not hunting?

Accidents happen. For some reason I don't get turned off at all about those signs. I am not a hunter, but I tend to want to give the hunters credit...
