I can see the hunters in the big game room w/ all the heads mounted.. "You should have seen the size of the backpack on the hiker that got away!" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's dangerous to be out in your own yard during hunting season in some places.. less woods.. more hunters. I heard a shot(black powder) last weekend that sounded close.. went looking and found some hunters on my property. I asked where they had permission to hunt.. they said the neighbor's adjoining property.. they were looking for a deer they had shot.. I told them.. that's fine.. but I let them know they were on my property.

Hiking anywhere with a deer costume on during hunting season is not a good idea! I think they have a term for this -> suicide by hunting.... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Makes perfect sense to me. The lower sign says, "Public hunting is permitted." It doesn't say anything about deer hunting, or turkey hunting, or quail hunting, it permits public hunting. Now, what good is it to permit hunting public if there's no public in the area? Obviously, they also have to encourage hiking in order to provide some public to be hunted. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Maybe the intent of the sign is not necessarily "hiking" but the prohibition of motorized vehicles. If that is the case they should have said so in words and not a pciture.

Years ago in Ma they opened up a hunting season at Quabbin Resevoir. A bunch of idiot anti's camped out at the gates before it began. Tires were slashed on the hunters vehicles that were scounting the area the prior week. On opening day one woman was arrested for running thru the woods dressed up like a deer. I personally wished that she got hit by a car instead. Road kill would have been justified for her. As for the tire slashings, no one was ever charged with it.

Its public ground, if you want to hike during a hunting season, then the sign says to exersize caution, so, exersize caution. Common sense.

The only people who are required at this time to wear orange in PA are hunters. If you are hiking during hunting seasons, then you really ought to blow 10 bucks or less and get a vest. Common sense. Hunting is one of the SAFEST sports there is, if not the safest. You can pull stats for your state and the country if you want.

There is a battle in this state over use of state gamelands. Hikers, bikers and ATV'ers want to be able to use them. In doing this they are trying to restrict hunting so that they can use the gamelands. Only problem is, the gamelands are not public ground, they are public hunting ground. They are paid for with hunter dollars, not general tax revenues.

National and state forests are a different story, those are paid out of the general fund, and are dual use. That is probably the same thing as the TVA land.

I figure they posted the bottom sign first, then decided it would be easier/cheaper to add another sign stating what season is open. That way they can just change the small sign as the hunting season changes... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well Don, that was sort of my take on it too. Although I don't think the two mix very well, maybe hikeers ought to be required to wear orange, and hunters ought to be required to wear backpacks & hiking boots? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I like the later comment about changing the sign depending on the season /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In NY it's a law you need to have so many square inches of orange on. A hat or vest are the minimum (think it's 400 sq inches). I'm a hunter and it's everyone's responsability to know your surroundings and be sure of your target and beyond. Really common sense stuff but I know that doesn't matter. Gun hunting in NY is about 3 weeks long. So for 49 weeks a year nature walkers have free reign of the place. For 3 weeks the other people such as hunters are afforded the freedom to do their thing also. It's a win-win for both groups, but you'd think anyone walking would know that 1) It's hunting season 2) They shoot lead out of those things. Maybe for this time of year I'll go to the mall and walk.
We all pay taxes and have the right to use common state land accordingly. I do agree this sign does confuse the issue. Either close the trails during hunting season or restrict hunting areas away from trails would be better.

Well, since hikers are considerably dumber (or at least less sensitive) than the animals when it comes to detecting a predator, it would probably be a good idea to give the hikers a sporting chance by requiring the hunters to wear a bell. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
