I'm back.
First I cannot say enough about Larry. He is a jewel. He took an afternoon, drove the 40 miles to our place, and helped me greatly in diagnosing and adjusting the problem. He also adjusted several of the things on the tractor which were not right. Such things as idle speed at 2000 rpm, electrical connections, etc.
As for the fires it was as close as I ever want to be. We evacuated twice. The second time the fire was absolutely h*e*l*l*. It is hard to imagine a wall of flame, a mile long and 200 feet high coming at you with winds of 50 mph. We had less than 30 minutes to get out. I have attached a couple of photos, one from the front of the house and the other from our gate.
Fortunately the wind shifted and we had no damage. Not so good a couple of miles north of us, 50 homes gone.
Now the problem is flooding. Since the mountain is bare the rain does not soak in. We have had up to seven feet of water running in the arroyo about 150 feet from the house. However we are high enough above the arroyo so that if it does get to us, Estancia and half the villages in Torrance County will be gone. So no worry there, just an interesting experience watching the water go through. We have had timbers, four feet long and 18 inches in diameter wash through. We even ended up with an old beat-up, broken tractor tire (about 40 inches in diameter) washed onto our property.
Thank you all for your expressions of concern.
Now to the tractor. By mistake I had said a 384 in the original post. It is a 284. It appears the problem was either the oil, the oil filter, or both. I have replaced both and now we have pressure.
The filter I got from NAPA. There are two numbers on the old one:JX0706P and LF3724. I do not know which one the lady at NAPA used to cross reference but she got me a NAPA Silver filter 21381 and it works just fine. Same size and threads.
Again thank you all for the advice and concern. And a big thank you to Larry.
