Re: Do you carry a weapon on your tractor?

Make sure you pack then-I hear they have rabid gophers in Michigan just waiting for Kubota and John Deere tractors to innocently plow by!

Re: Do you carry a weapon on your tractor?

You must have earned your PhD from the University of Chicago. I can usually spot their writing styles a mile away…
I think anyone who carries a pistol or a riffle on a tractor is doing so because they like to carry a weapon. I have a gopher problem in my orchard and have difficulty imagining sneaking up on anything in a tractor. Sort of like a stealth tank?
If anyone wants to carry a firearm while using heavy machinery, I recommend joining the 82nd, otherwise try to keep the chamber empty!

Nope. The real UT, Tennessee.

Read in your profile that you grow "exotic hot peppers". I bought a mixed pack of hot pepper seeds, thinking they would be in separate little pouches inside. Not so! So now I'm patiently waiting to see just what peppers I get. So far, I can recognize one cayenne, a couple of cherries, several jalapenos, and a Hungerian wax. I hope at least one of the others that hasn't set fruit yet is a jabanero. Have you ever seen a "peter" pepper, so called because of it's resemblance to .....? My brother and I each ate one on a bet. I'm on the Wall of Fire honor roll at the local Thai restaurant, but that thing hurt.

Re: Do you carry a weapon on your tractor?

Peter pepper is like a Yellow Bonnet - Habanero family pepper.
Those will kill anyone!
I have several friends in Thailand and what most people I have spoken to in the USA do not understand are that most Thai peppers are mild. Also, a Hot Thai pepper is just as hot to locals (with the same results…) as it is to us. They get used to them, but they are still hot as H_ _ _!
I had an experience with peppers you may enjoy. One of my lady friends in Bangkok sent me some of the medium hot Thai peppers. If you are familiar with them, the Thai peppers are about as hot as a Super Chili peppers from east LA. Anyway, when I received the package in the mail and saw those peppers, I had to try one out on the spot! The problem is that she sent me the peppers to grow and not to eat. Know where I am heading?
They do not wash the peppers using the same technique for planting as they do for eating. I had just eaten a Thai pepper that had probably been washed in street water in a village outside of nowhere in Thailand. Take my word for it-you do not want to step in that stuff let alone drink it!
Perfect timing! I was in the hospital in 48 hours with gastroenteritis.
Lovely!

Lordy! I bet it burned all the way going and coming!

I really do like hot pepper dishes, but I must confess that I can't say what the Thai dish that got me on the Wall of Fire list tasted like. It was a 10 out of 10 on the pepper scale, and I managed to get it all down without fainting, but I couldn't tell you anything about the flavor.

Re: Do you carry a weapon on your tractor?

Buster57,

You said, "I have a gopher problem in my orchard and have difficulty imagining sneaking up on anything in a tractor. Sort of like a stealth tank?"

Actually you can sneak up on animals on your tractor. Animals
generally fear people. Me riding my tractor aint a human. Its
this big noisy thing that is not a threat. Me walking down the
same path the tractor just took is another matter.

One of the loggers timbering my land told me that they drive
past deer all the time in their skidders and the critters do not
move. I really did not believe him until I followed a trail that
a skidder had just driven down a few minutes before me. No
animals ran from him. When ** I ** followed the skidder
down the path I had not walked 100 yards before 3 or 4 deer
jump up and ran away. They where no more than 25 yards
from the skidder and had not moved at all. When I got within
50 yards they figured they needed to be some place else.

I was working on the tractor one day and saw three dogs
run down one of my paths. I watched them for a few minutes
and they paid me no attention at all. Since these dogs had
collars I figured they where out for a walk with their owner
and he/she was tresspassing or they where on their own. I
turned off the tractor to see if I could hear anyone walking
in the woods. I did not hear anyone and I got off the tractor.
As soon as my feet hit the ground them dogs noticed me and
took off they way they had come.

So yes a tractor can make a lot of noise and be stealthy at
the same time! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: Do you carry a weapon on your tractor?

The *REAL* UT huh? Just moved back from the other UT land.

Tenn. is the team I love at least once if not twice a year when they go up against UF. (Is damnGators one word?) And the team I cursed as I spent a bunch of cash to go to the Fiesta Bowl a few years back only to see a poorly prepared FSU team self destruct after having no less than 5 miracles put them in the game in the first place.

One thing that really cracked me up at that game. There was no trash talking between FSU and Tenn fans. They just talked about those Damngators. Common enemy. Gad Zooks!

OK, so we go from defending against unknown predators in the wild, to the right to bear arms, to rabid ground hogs, to peppers, to college football. This thread has real potential. Esp. if we can keep it going to Christmas. Speaking of which, what do you want for Christmas? Me? An invite back to the Fiesta Bowl. Against UT.

Re: Do you carry a weapon on your tractor?

I like to watch UT play on TV, at least until they do something really dumb. That limits my TV watching somewhat. Here at MU, the principal sports are football coach bingo and basketball coach hairstyling.

Re: Do you carry a weapon on your tractor?

I agree on the fact that the critters (Ground Hogs in my case)
just look at the tractor as no threat. If I want to get a few and
my last count I am up to over 30 mounds on my 21 acres I
hunt from the tractor. If I am on foot they will whistle and
I then have very little chance of getting any. It does not seem to matter if the tractor is on or off as they just go about their business. That is as long as I stay on it.

Re: Do you carry a weapon on your tractor?

What you shoot those groundhogs with? I got a 22 Hornet while in AZ for the Pecary but it is also a good round for coyote (which I would rarely shoot one) and it would be potent on groundhog. I read where Hornaday has new rimfire round that nearly approximates the Hornet and that Ruger and Marlin offers rifles for it. I reload for the Hornet, 45 grain (2400FPS) soft points for Pecary, 30 grain (just over 3,000FPS) Hornaday varmint bullets for --er---varmints. These are designed to disintergrate if they hit anything so as to eliminate richochet, something I wish the ammo makers would do with the 22cal rimfire LR. I may have been hunting Pecary in AZ with a 22 Hornet but trust me, my back up was a bit more potent. J
