Do You Cover Your Vertical Exhaust Stack Tip While Trailering?

I'd sure would love to get a detailed explanation of this. A vacuum doesn't necessarily equal air movement. It just means negative air pressure. That would be held held constant if both inlet and outlet is sealed. Not sure how a turbo (fins) move without some type of air flow through the system. Don't buy that one open valve is going to create damage.

Yep, mechanical logic overrules opinion in this case.

And actually, you must have two valves open, intake/exhaust, in the same cylinder..... That is only possible by camshaft overlap. This overlap varies depending on the use of the engine. But in the most extreme case it's minimal at best. And will never have both vales open completely.

Would be interesting to hear a diesel mechanic explain it. Maybe I'm missing something..... :confused3:

i am a lowboy driver and haul machinery of all types; brand new, and older. I also work for a major brand dealer of large excavators. we never cover stacks on anything when we move them. i deliver almost million dollar machinery accompanied by a dealer rep and no one has ever said anything

His cam must have a LOT of overlap holding 2 valves open at the same time!!!!

It seems to me regardless of the turbo issue, I do not want dirty air going in the engine so I always cover mine when its on the trailer. If that is not a problem for you leave your air filter off of the intake and see how long your engine lasts.

I always thought covering the exhaust to protect the turbo was sort of an urban myth type of thing, but having my own equipment now, as long as turbos cost more than duct tape I'll take the precaution.

I like the nerf football idea, I'm going to try that one out.
