Do you do your own maintenance

I do ALL the maintainance on all our vehicles/tractors/mowers Etc.
I am far to cheap to pay someone else to fix it for me.
Just recently finished this project ,putting a new engine, radiator, clutch/pressure plate in my truck.

BTW, a few friends and family have managed to get a new oil pan from some of these "jiffy-quick, super-duper" lube places. The pan plug gets cross threaded and the guy keeps cranking it down as he looks to see all of the cars line up behind him.

Been There Done That! 2nd time they (two different places)cross threaded my drain plug was the last time I had someone else change my oil. Using an air gun on the drain plug, without first starting the bolt by hand, is obviously a common practice at some of these joints. :(

Most of us here in this site enjoy learning and working on our tractors. Spending extra time during off season working on tractors and implements is always fun for me. Repairing tractors in the middle of the mowing/growing season is a major PIA.

One thing I have noticed on the NH compacts is the difficulty of getting the hydrostatic and hydraulic filters off without the right oil filter wrenches. It took some looking, but I found two sizes of filter wrenches that fit around the filters in tight spots and their jaws tighten when you take them off with a ratchet wrench. The jaws are on springs so they will fit on a lot of different sized filters and they fit into some tight spots. I found them in Carquest Auto Parts Stores. On my TC-23, a normal filter wrench will not work for those filters. Any of you guys notice how our tractors seem to shrink over the years? I don't fit under them as well as I used to.

do your own maintenance, save a few $$$ and learn about your tractor.

I have replaced a radiator on the Kubota in addition to doing regular service, other than getting my hand in there no problem.

A $4 strap wrench works just fine.

You got that right.

When i changed the oil in my 850 a few months ago ( just got it )... A gorilla must have spun that fram ph8a on.. The strap wrench actually collapsed the filter getting it off... glad i had it... the screwdriver option would have been too messy..

I may look like a gorilla but certainly don't have the physical prowess of one. :D All my filters are spun a shade tighter that normal hand tightening. I do all my repair and maintenance on all my vehicles, engines and a lone tractor.

When it comes to hard to spin filter my first choice is filter wrench and not filter strap. stabbing it with a respectable screwdriver is distant 3rd.

Of all the filter removal tools I have (and pictured is only the tip of the iceberg) the most used are the 3 jaw one used with a 3/8 ratchet and the strap wrench. I have changed thousands upon thousands of filters and those two tools will do the majority of them.

Which one? If your talking about the 3 jawed one it is a Mac Tools filter wrench, part number OFH2172A. I like this the best because it the largest diameter range. From 2 1/2 inch's to 4 3/4 inch's.

They also make two other models. The OFH276A and the OF63600A
