....just sit and watch your chickens? I may be easy to entertain but mine are fascinating. Some of them free roam, so many times all I need to do is glance out the window to get a show from the comfort of the a/c. What I've noticed most is the way the roosters care for their flock.

I just saw Big Red, our RIR rooster, scratch around in the dirt, discover something edible and then he walked around in a circle clucking (I guess) and the hens came running, fought over whatever it was. One hen took of running, holding her head high with all the others on her tail. Whatever it was, she must have gotten it. He watched this diplay and then went back to scratching in the dirt.

I guess somebody stepped on somebody else's toes because two hens went at each other pecking and chest butting, neck feathers all fanned out. Mostly bluffing. All I need now is to add some chicks and the picture will be complete.

Cindi, we watch our chickens all the time!! Like you said, they're fascinating. I love watching them scratch in the leaves, and suddenly, they find something good to eat. They grab it and swallow it, and then they do a little happy dance!!

Our chickens also always remember when someone feeds them. They will always run towards someone who they think will feed them, if they don't get a snack, they'll just follow that person hoping to get one later.

My friend Tim, who is the carpenter on our home restoration project, is an animal lover, and he'll often toss the chickens scraps of his lunch. It's hysterical watching this big carpenter walking around our house carrying all sorts of tools, with a crowd of chickens following him where ever he goes!! We've started calling him "Big Bird" because we think the chickens think he's a giant chicken!!!

When Jake was little we had chickens and he would never fail to go out the door with a cookie or something in his hand and he would get attacked. It was so cute to watching him standing on the top step furiously kicking at chickens trying to defend his property. 'No Chicken, no!'

Then it got to the point that he didn't even have to have anything in his hand, they would still follow him just in case.
