Do you give your phone # to stores???

Aren't those credit card readers kinda scary? I recently had to close a credit card account because someone had managed to get enough of my information to almost send some money to himself by Western Union. In talking to the card security people, they mentioned that buying gas was usually the first thing one of the scammers will do to see if the card he has will work....no face-to-face required. Then, and this is something everyone should be aware of, I happened to ask what my credit limit was. I was thinking about how much damage could potentially be done if someone, somehow, got into my account past the various checks they do. Turns out that account had a $14,000 limit!!! My gosh!!! And my wife has a card with an even higher limit!!! Turns out many cards automatically bump up your limit if you pay on time. Great. But I don't need to be able to buy a new car with my credit card. That's why I belong to a credit union.

BTW, I've been reading this thread and drinking my coffee, and I just now woke up to the fact that POS software isn't the Piece Of Shi# software I was thinking ya'll meant. Though it sounds as if that might also be a viable description.

( Makes sense to me, Don. Come to think of it, in addition to Tractor Supply Co., I think Circuit City must do the same thing )

So did Service Merchandise (use phone number as primary identification)... and where are they now? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif (bankrupt & out of business)

As I recall, they used phone number as primary identification, so your name would show on your receipt which was then used to pick up the goodies at their pickup counter. They tried to get away from that model but I think their ship was 80% underwater by that time and it was just too late.

The 10 items or less dont want to wait on your big order to get going, they cater to them in that sense.

I get griped when joe and jane, get groceries, toys, and department store stuff all in the one or two carts and I have to wait while my ice cream gets warm for thier "shopping" experience. There are upwards of 30 cash outs in my super wally world, I wish the managers would use them and put people in them that know how to check out quickly, correctly and effieciently.

But what do they do, put in self service check outs, where you do it all yourself, and pay the same price as those that use employee filled lines...........

Rant done, good point Bob

Yep, Chuck, they do periodically bump the limit if you pay regularly. My credit cards have limits far far above anything we'd ever use. Twice I've had to close accounts and get new cards and numbers when someone else managed to charge items on my cards. I'm not sure how they got the information, but of course there are many ways possible.

Personally, I prefer the self service checkouts; quicker and easier for me.

Also, stores such as TSC often request the phone number sho they can see the areas from which their customers are coming. This helps them determine locations for additional stores. When our Fort Pierce Tractor Supply noted that many of their customers came from Okeechobee, it helped them determine that and Okeechobee store would be economically viable, and they opened one.>>>>>

So if I go and spend a bunch of money giving my address and info, I can get them to put a TSC right next door to my house.............cool beyond compare.

shoot I could drive the tractor to the TSC then!!!!!!!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Last person that used my credit card, lost her job, lost her freedom for a short time, and lost a good friend to boot.

As for the self checkouts, I do like them for the one or two items things, but the stores should provide checkouts for the number of people in lines. Long lines stink. If I am in line, I am done, take my money and let me get on with life. I have seen 4 lines open with 16 not being used, and employees standing around, makes no sense to me.

No matter how high your credit limit you should only be liable for $50 so don’t be concerned, they’re raising it, they’re sticking their neck out.

( I'm one of those folks who signs his name quite legibly on nearly everything, including the back of my credit cards, but with the new electronic machines at Home Depot, Sam's Club, Wal-Mart, etc., I just quickly scribble a line across it, and it's never been questioned. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif )

I’m like you there, Bird. Those little screens are hard to write on so I just scrawl something on them and it works.

I have used my boss’s company credit card (with his permission of course) several times at these places. Swipe the card myself, stick it in my shirt pocket, and sign his name, never a problem. Kind of scary.

The other day I used my mother’s credit card in a Best Buy store to purchase a computer part for her. The young lady carefully looked at the signature on the back of the card, and then asked for ID. I figured now I am gonna have to explain this, she looked at my drivers license and said, “Thank you” and out the door I went. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I dont give phone, zip or address. I would not have come back when he FIGURED out how to sell it. If they get insstant then 123 main street works for me. When Ask for a number if they insit then any 10 digits will work, I have even given the phone number for the company wanting the number. The clerk doest care about anything except filling in the forms on the screen.
