Do you give your phone # to stores???

If you pay with cash they have no right to expect you to give ANY personal info PERIOD. My number is also listed but that does not mean I have to go around giving it up. I don't even give them my zip code. If they want to know where I live let them follow me home!!!!
It may sound paranoid but the more info you give the more they can track not only what you buy but how you buy how much you spend on the average etc.
Plus what's to stop them from selling your info???? I give out very little info and I still seam to get junk mail from companies I would never buy from.
If they told me your phone # or no sale, I'd walk in a heartbeat and won't look back!!!
It just burns my wick that they ask in the first place.

I was asked for my phone number over the weekend and gave it.
I did ask why they ask for it and was told that it is easier to I.D. you as you (i.e. John Smith, Steve Jones etcetera) amongst other things (warranties, recalls, etc.).
Your phone number is like your S.S.N. Only YOU have that number. Gerard

i've had several home numbers over the yrs.....does that mean they think I'm at least 3 people... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I have no home phone again... I still give my old # if they insist or I will give my cell if they have a place for a bizz #. Since if they need to reach from 7-6 it will be at that #...

Also the FCC frowns on cell phone solisitors as it may cost the person being called $$$ in air time. When I 1st installed my DTV, I told them they could have my cell # but list it as that or work as I had no land line. With in 3 days I got a call to upgrade my package yada yada yada. I said no thanks and I told them again not to call this # unless it was bill or etc.
With in a week I got a second call. This time I promtly but politly asked for a manager and got one. I explained to them again not to call my cell for solicitation and please list it as work or such with a note about using it as previously requested. Mentioning that FFC doesn't take kindly to cell solicitaion. Now I know it is not likely a hard writtin law but most companies do not like to triffle with such possibility and if you politly point it out to them, they most often will oblige you.

I have not had any other calls from them in 3+yrs even though I have activated 2 DTV tivo's in the last few months(knock, knock, knock on wood, wood, wood ) I did tell them mail or email was welcome. I do get snail mail from them...

Oddly the only call have been from the cell carrier offerring me upgrade deals... there # showed up as no $$$ charge on the phone bill for the air time. I wrote them down to check cause I was in the middle of a job and a bit put out...

The Bass Pro cashier asked for photo ID and phone number this morning when I gave her my credit card. I got to laughing about it when I thought of this thread and she admitted that she had no idea why they're supposed to ask for a phone number, although she really didn't care whether I gave her one or not. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

kinda interesting about how you mention the photo id thing, at work we used to have home depot cards that anyone in the company could use, then for some reason they later assigned the cards to specific names, well my boss usally would just give me his card and tell me to sign his name, did it alot of times and never had a problem since they rarely ask for id. well just last week i was there and the girl asked if i had any id on me, i acted like i was looking for it in my wallet and was like, oh, no im sorry i dont have it on me, then to my surprise she was like oh thats ok, just sign here, of course i was so surprised i dodged that bullet that i forgot what i was doing and started to sign my name not my bosses which was on the card, i quickly hit the clear button and signed my name, all right in front of her, she never questioned any of it, i was glad at the time cause i woulda been in trouble otherwise but it realy made me think how easy it is for people to steal and use other peoples credit cards
