Do you grease your tractor\'s PTO stub shaft?

Hi,

Seems like greasing the PTO shaft of the tractor would be a good idea, unless dirt could get mixed in and cause accelerated wear.

What is the normal practice? Should I or shouldn't I?

I did grease my mid PTO shaft, but that was because I don't have a use for it and wanted to protect it from rusting...

I keep it lightly greased and religiously keep the plastic cover on it. The greasing seems to let the pto coupling go on/off a little easier. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I don't `put grease because it will get dried and gummed up and covered with dirt. What I do is carry a can of WD-40 on the tractor. I always spray the pto shaft and the implement coupler before I put them together. I also use the WD-40 on the third arm and the side tilt threads any time I use them.

I see you are listed as being in Syracuse New York. Are you familiar with a large corporation called Carrier Air Conditioning. I worked for a couple of thier distributors in Minnesota for about ten years. And now I am one of thier dealers selling thier products.

I put an oil soaked rag in the implement end of the shaft, that helps putting it back on 6 months later. bcs

The best thing I have found is Lock Ease. It is spray graphite. The liquid carrier disolves quickly and leaves
dry graphite behind. Does not attract dirt/dust etc. Works good on the spring loaded pin on the female side
also.
