I'm going to try and relate this as it happened, and hope that I can somehow portray the impact this event had on Jill and I.
We were in a huge argument. Lots of tension, teenage angst versus maternal bitterness battling head to head in a gritty take no breaths and give no lee way fight to the finish.
We reached a point where I demanded that the argument stop. Nothing was being accomplished. We were down to saying hurtful things and both of us had lost our direction. I escaped to the kitchen sink to wash dishes and she plopped herself down in front of the television.
The next thing I knew she shoved a handwritten note under my nose. 'Mom...I'm sorry that I got so mad but...blah blah blah....' She was basically continuing the argument on paper. The little so and so. Had to have the last word.
I decided that two could play that game, so I dried my hands, sat down at the table and was responding to the note, writing my reply at the bottom of the page, when the phone rang.
It was her boyfriend. The very subject of our argument. I was complaining that she spent too much time with him and his family and away from home, and the fact that he called in the middle of this argument did nothing to soothe me. We are still trying to work this out.
"I'm done with this." I said and I stood up and dropped the unfinished response on the desk in front of her. "You're busy."
Okay it was sarcastic, but that's where I was at that moment. She held up her index finger and mouthed 'wait....wait!'Then she quickly scribbled something on the paper, the phone tucked under one ear, and handed it back to me. This is what it said.....
"Do you know how hard it is to be a teenager and be stuck out here in the middle of nowhere? I found sombody that I really care for and you should be happy for me."
I flipped the paper over and added a few lines of my own.
"Do YOU know how hard it is to raise a child for sixteen years and suddenly find out that she would rather be anyplace than with you? I always cared for you and you should be happy WITH me. At least a few days a week anyway."
She read what I wrote, glanced at me and suddenly shushed me by raising her hand even though I hadn't said a word. Neither of us had.
"No, I don't hear it." She said into phone. "What did they say.....well what did it sound like?" Then...
"Oh my God. Please tell my mother what you just told me." She thrust the receiver at me.
"Hello Paul."
"Yes ma'am?"
"You had something to tell me?"
"Well, I was telling Jill that I kept hearing voices on the line, like another conversation bleeding over onto ours."
"Oh?" How very interesting. This felt like a maneuver to change the subject to me.
"What were they saying?" I asked, cued to present that question by following Jill's example.
"Well, I really only heard one voice, I just assumed that there were two, but the one voice kept saying 'do you know how hard it is..?....do you know how hard it is..?"
The first line in both our notes to each other. I know for a fact the neither of us said a thing out loud.
Could it be that these two are so connected that he not only called unexpectedly during an argument over him, but actually heard our thoughts? Or maybe just hers? Do you know how hard it is...to accept that that might be true? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
