Stomp on the gas in a new Ford Mustang or F-150 and you'll hear a meaty, throaty rumble the same style of roar that Americans have associated with auto power and performance for decades.

It's a sham. The engine growl in some of America's best-selling cars and trucks is actually a finely tuned bit of lip-syncing, boosted through special pipes or digitally faked altogether. And it's driving car enthusiasts insane.

Several attempts to speak with Ford's sound engineers about the new F-150, a six-cylinder model of America's best-selling truck that plays a muscular engine note through the speakers, were quietly rebuffed.

Like lots of ignorant youngsters, I once put dual glass packs on my Mercury when I was a teenager. And I later rigged an exhaust cut out on a Studebaker. It's hard to believe I was once that dumb.:laughing: Now, the quieter an engine is, the better I like it. I used to have Honda and BMW motorcycles and NO WAY would I own or ride very far on one of those noisy Harleys.:laughing:

When I was shopping for trucks last year one of the biggest turn off's for the Ford and Chevy's was how quiet they were.

One of my strongest memories from childhood was listening to a corvette roadster with side pipes idle along the beachfront in Myrtle Beach. It had an old tech long overlap cam, and it just sounded glorious.

I remember hearing about this practice on newer versions of a BMW roadster I own and love. They replaced the sweet smooth inline six with a four cylinder turbo for improved emissions and fuel economy, and now add some fake engine noise into the cockpit. The whole thing is lame -- the four turbo is no substitute engine wise, and the noise is totally artificial. The thing is, younger generations probably don't know the difference. They don't know what they are missing in the classic engines or the noise they make. The sound could be coming from their cell phones for all they'd care.

I've got glass packs on my '59 Impala (283) and my '60 Impala (350) and I love it. The old Impalas look beautiful and the old glass packs sound lovely through the eyes and ears of an 18 year old.

If my truck has fake engine sounds, I would want a selector switch.

Silent, B&S, JD2cyl, 4, 6, V8, V12, V16, Cat, Cummins, Radial, Jet, Turboprop, EMD, Alco, etc.

Ours is stock and sounds nice. Real throaty. I also like how it doesnt shut off at 95 like other trucks.

I like the way our 2013 Impala sounds going through the gears at 6500rpm... its more like a two-stroke motorcycle than the small block v8s that I grew up with, but its a fun sound for sure. And it does it quite effortlessly, compared to V6s I've owned in the past. Brings a smile when I pull onto the highway. :laughing:
