Do you like to drive?

As I was driving around today I realized that there are a lot of people driving around talking on the phone. And not just a quick call to see if the wife wants you to pick up milk or something. As I was thinking about it I wondered if there are a lot of people who are bored with driving? I realized that most of the time I like driving. I hate it when the phone rings when I am doing something I like. Remember when you first got your licence? Have you ever been happier?

Hate it. I average only 7K-8K miles / yr on my truck. I'm lucky that my wife almost always agree to drive her van when the family goes anywhere together. And she usually drives when just the 2 of us go somewhere. I'd bet she puts 25 K miles / yr on her vehicle.

Oh, and BTW, she also loves yakking on the cell phone while driving.

I love to just go out in the country and drive for a few hours. I do not enjoy talking on a cell phone while driving. I find that I get where I'm going, but don't remember what happened while I was getting there. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Yeah...I remember when I was younger I enjoyed driving very much. I loved road trips.

Then I grew to hate it. Rude drivers, traffic, time, slow drivers, fast drivers. They all detracted from the experience.

Now that I moved out a little more into the "boonies" I have a 40 minute commute. Luckily, most of the drive is through farm country with no stoplights and hardly any traffic (until I get close to my destination). In addition, I have discovered books on CD. I'm addicted to listening to them while driving. Sometimes, during the weekend I can't wait to get back to work just so I can listen to my current book. It really makes my drive more enjoyable.

Similar story here. 10 years ago I lived closer to work, but had a 30-40 minute commute due to traffic. I hated it. We moved further away, but in another direction, now my commute is 30 minutes of peace. No stress, to traffic and I do listen to books on CD. The drive now allows me to get ready for the day or wind down, rather than get stressed out in traffic. Yes, I like to drive, 60K miles a year on 2 cars between my wife and I..

When I lived in Miami, everything was within a few miles... 30mi seemed like forever away... I would dread going 30-40mi..

Since I moved to Georgia and drive 65mi each way for work, even the gorcery store is a 20min drive.. I go back to Florida and cant get over how close things are that I remember being a long ways away..I notice being in a better mood when I get home now because I'm not still in work mode (/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif)....The longer drive has a calming effect, I get to look for deer and other wildlife on the drive...

Because I drive about 33k to and from work each year, then work related travel in the company vehicle, plus any vacation or family travel... I'm probably in the 60-70k per year club now, its nothing for me to make the 700mi trip to Ft Lauderdale by myself, driving straight through only stopping for gas and not being beat when I get there.. Could never even think about it before.. Guess its more of a necessity than a joy, but I found the best thing I ever did was get a hands free setup for that darn phone and satelite radio, I never get board anymore.. If I could just convince others on the road of the comon courtesy of staying in the right lane unless you are the faster vehicle, it might be more of a joy...

I do enjoy a good road trip where the destination isn't as important as the journey. Don't get a chance to do that much anymore. I've been traveling with work more lately and it's OK but not great.

I don't enjoy talking on the phone anytime but find myself doing it a lot more lately during my commute and the business trips /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

One of my reasons for moving away from California was I absolutely hated driving anyplace. The last year I was there I actualy caught myself yelling at other drivers for cutting me off or rude driving.

Now I'm in a place without freeways and very little traffic. It's nice going places and seeing the scenery. When my brother was here last week, we drove all over East Texas looking at land for him, and it was really nice.

I told him that if you have to be in a car, it's so much nicer to see trees, pastures and farms than it is to see concrete in one for or another no matter where you looked.

One thing that is becomeing more and more apperant is that people can't talk and drive at the same time. When I picked him up from the airport and bringing him back to DFW, I got stuck behind cars doing 50 mph on Interstate 20 with a 70 mph speed limit. They were on the phone and had no idea of there speed.

This is becoming a very common thing in my opinion. In time, I'm sure there will be laws passed against cell phones in cars. It's too much of a distraction to carry on a conversation and drive at the same time for too many people.

It depends... I HATE traffic. I do not like to drive or ride in traffic. However, if off the beaten path, I like to get out on the road, whether car/truck or motorcycle.

As part of the driving expierience, I like to drive anything I can. I have driven a number of different cars and pickups of different brands and models. Same for motorcycles, dirtbikes, quads.I LOVE to drive tractors. Various CUTS, new and old, Kubota's to Ford 8N's, 2N's, Farmall A, ect. Newer Mahindra's. Kubota L35, B21, L2950. I got to operate a dozer one time; it was a Massey the same size as a CAT-D2. I've driven 7 different fire engines, a water tender, a dump truck. And various Bobcat, CAT, and ASVi skidsteers and track loaders.

I think it is fun to try those things out. I think that is as much if not more fun than just driving /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The one thing I remember from just getting my license, is not knowing where things were. Sure, friends houses or the local market. But other places I went with my family and stuff, I just rode along, not paying attention. Then, when I had to drive there, I had to ask for directions or street names /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
