Re: Do you trust your parking brakes? I don\'t...

What might be neat would be a feature kind of like "Park" on an automatic car. A position of the shifter which would not only put the thing in neutral but would also engage a solid lock in the transmission itself. Hmm. Wonder why nobody has done that? Of course they'd have to make sure it couldn't be engaged when moving.. maybe that problem alone would make it impractical to design...

Re: Do you trust your parking brakes? I don\'t...

My Branson has a similar mechanism, but it is quite substantial and takes some effort to release. The only problem I have with it is the location of the lever--too low.

My neighbor has a MF with a hand operated parking brake. He came out one day to find his tractor listing at a 45 degree angle halfway into a gully a short distance from his house. It was the only time he parked it with the brake set, but without lowering the bucket.

Fortunately there was no damage except for the towing bill. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: Do you trust your parking brakes? I don\'t...

This seems to be a "Universal Problem" with the brakes. And the largest single problem I notice is that people "set" the brakes, but always forget to "release" them.

How about Kubota (And all mfg) putting a little light on the dash like automobiles that light up and says "Parking Brakes".

That way you will notice it when you get on the tractor to start it up or move it !

At the very least, maybe a sticker that reminds you "CHECK YOUR BRAKES" or something similar.

Does anyone here have any "pull" with Kubota? Maybe pass along the suggestion.

Re: Do you trust your parking brakes? I don\'t...

Yes, I trust my parking brake. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I have never had a problem with it.

A light comes on in the dash telling me that it has been engaged. Mine is a hand lever, (like cars have between the front seats) located to the left of the seat that I pull up on. Push the button at the end of the lever to release. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Very simple operation.

Trev, That would be the slick trick, locking the driveline like they do on automatics in cars. I'm not impressed with the brake setup on my bx either, and it doesn't have a light. Been half heartedly looking at adding a switch and light on the dash. Maybe this winter...............

I'm not impressed with mine either (BX). It would help if I could tell by looking at the lock lever that the brakes were set. I've been thinking that I might stick a piece of tubing of something on the lock to make it a little more obvious when the brake is set. I heard the hydro clicking the other day as the tractor started backwards down the hill by itself. The bucket was down, full of rocks and the brake was set. It would not have gone anywhere but I am not impressed with the emergency brake.

Re: Do you trust your parking brakes? I don\'t...

I'm surprised with all the parking brake complaints. Makes me wonder if people are setting them properly. Sounds like most of the tractors are set up the same way, that is, you step on the brake pedal and pull up a lever. All the lever does is lock the pedal at what ever position you push it to. The lever itself does not set the brake pressure. If you don't trust your parking brake then you shouldn't trust your brakes either. You should be setting the brake with the pedal pushed down as hard as if you were sitting in the seat trying to hold the tractor on a hill with the brake. If the brakes won't hold with you pressing on the pedal, they need adjustment. If they will hold, then the parking brake will hold just a well. With the parking brake set with a hard pedal push it takes an equally hard pedal push to release them, not an accidental tap. On my 755, the tractor will not move with the parking brake set even if I push the forward pedal. I don't need a light on the dash to tell me the brake is set. The tractor shakes, engine wants to stall and the tractor don't move.

Re: Do you trust your parking brakes? I don\'t...

I've never had a problem with the brakes on my Iseki either. It just sounds like another neglected part on a tractor. They need adjusting. The more the brakes wear, the more out of adjustment they get.... just like cars.

Re: Do you trust your parking brakes? I don\'t...

I agree. The brakes either work or they don't, regardless of whether you hold the pedals down with your foot or lock them down mechanically. I think Yanmar got it right. Very complicated.....A lever with notches to the left of the left brake pedal. When you press the pedals, locked together, and pull the lever toward you a notch grabs a bracket on the pedal and locks it down.

Jeff, there's one thing for certain. John Deere has some **** good brakes.
