I think it was an interlock solenoid that overheated if the brake pedal was pressed for too long. Say if the driver sat there parked with his foot on the brake. Once it overheats it will no longer lock out the shifter and so the vehicle could be shifted out of park without requiring brakes depressed.

My wife's Honda Pilot has buttons on the console instead of a shifter, and that would be a real safety hazard if the brake interlock failed for some reason. I've seen both our dog and my daughter accidentally press the "D" button.

I remember before the shifter interlock. We got along without the shifter interlock for several decades.

On the topic of recalls, there is no doubt the sheer number is out of control and Chrysler is likely the worst. I own two RAMs, a 2013 and a 2015. Both have been trouble free but the number of recals on both is out of control. I just received a new recall for both of my RAMs. Something to do with roll rate sensing and side air bag deployment. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RCLRPT-17V302-4937.PDF

sounds like yet another truck cpu reflash. Mine has been reflashed four times so far...
Our trucks are becoming like our cars, rolling computers.

I Have 2 different model pilots, have not seen one with buttons on the console. Is that the newest design?

My brother managed to knock our early 1990s 15 passenger Ford Clubwagon from park into neutral when he was 3(ish). It rolled backwards across the road, slid along the power pole (breaking the rearmost big window on the side and was stopped by a stump catching the diff on the rear axle.
If it hadn't been for that stump, there was a 45 degree (12/12 pitch) slope for 15 feet (with just some brush on it), then a half mile downhill corn field to a strip of forest.
Not sure why the shift interlock failed that time (it had never done that before and never did it again) but it baffled everyone.

The new pilots with the highest trim level have a different transmission and the push button transmission, it’s the same as the Acura MDX. I think it’s a 8 speed.

Thanks, hadn't seen that.
