I think it was an interlock solenoid that overheated if the brake pedal was pressed for too long. Say if the driver sat there parked with his foot on the brake. Once it overheats it will no longer lock out the shifter and so the vehicle could be shifted out of park without requiring brakes depressed.
My wife's Honda Pilot has buttons on the console instead of a shifter, and that would be a real safety hazard if the brake interlock failed for some reason. I've seen both our dog and my daughter accidentally press the "D" button.
