Does a new tractor use oil?
I have a DK45SE that is my first tractor and first diesel engine of any kind. I purchased the tractor new in June and it has 42 hours on it now.

I check the fluid levels each time I use the tractor.
Today when I went to fire it up I noticed the oil level was down some from when I used it last week.

Some particulars:

The tractor starts easily. It has some clatter and tap when cold that go away when its warmed up. My routine is to let it sit and idle until warm before I drive it or operate the hydraulics. It runs great after warmup.

I did get a blast of light smoke on start up today that lasted for a split second. First time for the smoke. We had a very cold night this week with some snow and sleet. Not sure if that could cause that or not.

I used the tractor for 5-6 hours last week digging postholes. First time I have used it for that task. Since the pto speed needs to be pretty low for the auger and I had to dig out the holes drop the poles and tamp the dirt the tractor spent almost the whole time at idle or low rpms.

Any thoughts?

I've ran diesel engines for close to 15 years and all of them regardless of manufacture will use some oil. Let it be known that I have NEVER owned a brand new diesel though. The one thing to look for is a blue tinted smoke, that means your burning oil. The blue smoke will be present even when the engine is warm. You will get smoke when you just start up a diesel, especially in cold weather, main thing is to check when under a load and when engine is warm at idle. Another thing to remember is that as the engine gets wear on it, certain gaskets will allow some oil to seep, if you ever look at an older diesel you'll see places the oil has seeps out and hardened around certain areas. you may need to tightn some bolts ( check manual for tork specs). Hope this helps.

Warhammer, any tractor is going to use a little oil from time to time, you didn't say how much it was down, keep checking it before use. The smoke at start up is normal.

There are two notches on the dipstick. When I took delivery of the tractor the oil was about 90% or so of the way up towrds the top notch. Now its about 70-75% of the way towards the top notch. Not sure what that equates to in oil quantity.

My CK30 with 750 hours on it has never used any oil. Seriously, I fill it to the "full" notch and then after the 100 hour interval I verify that it is still at the notch before draining it. I have been impressed with the engine's lack of oil consumption. The oil is of course blacker.

My old International 500 bulldozer wouldn't use oil either. It was a 3 cylinder 45 HP diesel from some german company.

The used 2000 F350 with the IH diesel that I just bought has a 5000 mile interval and it seems to do very well though not as well as the Kioti. After 129000 it hasn't needed oil added to it yet but I can see the slow consumtion on the stick.

I expect some oil consumption and believe it to be normal on a daily driven machine with lots of cold starts and short run times at higher rpm.

Your Kioti is using too much oil if you feel you need to check it each day. You didn't say how much oil it took to refill it and the actual hours of use.

Hi,
As with any new engine, the parts have to wear-in and seat themselves. The first 100 hours are where it will be most noticeable. Just try to vary your rpms and don't run at a steady rpm for a long period of time.
Even when set in the engine will normally use 1/2 a quart between regular oil changes. Nothing to worry about unless you have excessive smoke.
When starting a cold diesel a few puffs of smoke are normal. They hate cold fuel. You can run your glow plugs manually once started by turning the key slightly toward start position. This will stop the smoking much quicker.
