I am trying to think of one time where adevertising had an influence on me. I have yet to buy oil, drugs, tractor equipment, shoes, sports drinks, soda, Depends diapers, James Sokolove trial attorney, autos/trucks, beer, etc., etc., etc., am I the exception? They try harder and harder to get it in your face and if anything I get more and more resistive to it. Is there such a thing as too much? MY newspaper has got to be 80% advertising. There is no such thing as free, having to watch commericals takes my time. I don't object, but find it interesting that some folks say its the price you pay to get "free" service.

If I already have a preference, like you advertising is counter-productive.

However, I occasionally see a product I didn't know about, and if further research, need, and finances all agree, will buy.

Irronically, I never paid much attention to the advertising of a certain tractor mfg on TBN until I was considering buying one. Now that I have it, their advertising seems more present; doesn't necessarily make me want to buy more attachments, but somehow a warm fuzzy I don't get from Ford or GM (own one of each) ads. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Perhaps, just like buying a car then noticing every third car on the road is the same model? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You sound just like me. I don't buy stuff, just because they make a spiel for it. I know two different guys that will buy anything and everything that is on late night TV. I don't understand it. Are there that many suckers? There must be or that wouldn't advertise the way they do.

If the commercials are for free service, why are they on purchased videos ?

Commercials to me now-a-days mostly seem to say "be stupid like the person in our commercial and buy our product.

No I don't think it works on me, not in the way it was intended anyway. My biggest gripe is why do they make commercials so loud? I can be watching something and when the commercials start it will hurt your ears, it is so loud. I just hit the mute button so that "their" plan to make me hear it totally backfires. My son recently got me a satellite receiver with a hard drive and now I record almost everything I watch and just zip through the commercials. A 1 hour TV show takes less than 40 minutes to watch this way.

If the Commercials did not work why do some companies spend so much money on them?

There is no question advertising works, I may have purchased something as a result of it. I do not doubt that I have passed on information to someone about a product as a result of an ad. I simply cannot recall anything where radio, TV or for that matter the internet put an idea in my head and made me want to purchase a product. Now, if your talking about some well placed ads in Fine Homebuilding, thats another story. I have purchased a few items becasue of their ad in Fine Homebuilding. I actually enjoy the advertising there.

Ahh,

You don't think it works on you? Go ahead, reach for some "tissues" while you think about it. Need a "copy" of what I am about to say? Since I cannot hear myself perhaps a "Cotton swab" can help. Since I lost my last batch, pehaps some "fabric fastners" will help bind them to me. First I should remove those "plastic bandages". Maybe I ought to turn off my "portable music player".

Brand names have come into everyday life through advertising.

I believe it was P.T. Barnum who said, "There's no such thing as bad publicity". That was his take on "free advertising" through negative press.

Any time a brand name is uttered on TV, radio, mentioned in the newspaper, or posted on a sign, that name is burned into SOMEONES brain.

At any time, there's someone, somewhere, interested in the subject matter of that add you don't want to watch.

Advertising works. Just not on everyone, or all the time.

NOT advertising works too. Just not in the desired manner.

The fact that you rattled off several "brand names" from the adds you find so offensive tells me that they "hit home". Those names are in your mind now. IF and when you ever need their services, guess what will pop to the front of your memory . ? . ? . ?

Advertising doesn't necessarily cause people to buy something they wouldn't otherwise but it does have an impact on which brand they buy and when they buy it.
