Does anybody buy ammo online?

I'd trust the SSL to the server at the site before I would trust my information going through a 3rd party, especially one in another country.

Sir - a VPN and a SSL are two entirely different worlds, like apples and oranges.

VPNs use a combination of dedicated connections and encryption protocols to generate virtual P2P connections, even if snoopers did manage to siphon off some of the transmitted data, they'd be unable to access it on account of the encryption. What's more, VPNs allow individuals to spoof their physical location葉he user's actual IP address is replaced by VPN provideré*llowing them to bypass content filters. So, you may live in Tehran but appear to live in Texas, enabling you to slip past the government filters and commit the treasonous act of watching a YouTube video. The horror.

A secured VPN basically makes you invisible on the internet, hiding be hide layers of encryption.

SSL protects data in transit by encrypting it. It only ensures, to a client, that data will make it from their computer to your server without being intercepted or altered (the encrypted data could be intercepted but has no meaning without decryption). That said, it is the client's responsibility to ensure that SSL is functioning properly before they send any data or trust output from the server. There are attacks that will remove SSL from the connection, but not that will intercept or alter data sent over a secured SSL connection.

SSL does not provide any security once the data is on the server. It is still necessary to use hashing and server side encryption if you want to protect the data at rest from breaches to the server itself.

This is how Target and major retailers lose personal account data and c-card information.

The VPN will not stop the same security issue of the retailer servers, however it will stop all eavesdropping on your internet browsing.

I used to buy a lot of ammo online. However you need to be able to sign for it, which is just impossible for me to do right now.

Happy shopping!

I keep seeing other people say this as well, but I have yet to sign for a shipment of ammunition. Most of the time, it is delivered by Fedex and left on my doorstep. Sometimes it is UPS, but they always just leave it at the door or on the porch. Is something like that left to the discretion of the driver, or is it specified by the shipper? As mentioned, most of the ammo that I have ordered comes from Sportsmans Guide, but I've gotten it from several other places as well, and I've never signed. The only things that I've signed for have been when I've ordered a firearm and then I think the shipper designates that it has to be signed for and can't just be left sitting around.

Just curious, because I agree - it would be tough for me to wait around to sign for ammo if that were the case.

Good luck and take care.

I just have it shipped to my wife's office, that way the receptionist can sign if needed. I believe it is the seller that requests a signature because 1 out of 10 deliveries need it.

Forgive me for being outdated. I haven't shot or bought ammo in 30-40 years. But I do have some Remington and Winchester 22LR ammo that old. Is that old ammo still good? Does Remington or Winchester still make it? I'd like to buy some new ammo from Remington or Winchester however, ........ and wherever I can get some.
Cheers,

I haven't had any issues buying online. It is cheaper and much more convenient than physically going to a store, just to learn they're out.

I have rarely had to sign for a delivery, but I did a couple of times. I'm not sure what is behind that. IME, the UPS guy knows exactly what he's delivering - even down to round count.

As for a VPN, I understand the technology, but not the need when ordering ammo. The SSL traffic would just tell a snooper that I'm communicating with a company that sells ammo, which doesn't seem too valuable to me. If I was going to be paranoid, there is a lot of other more specific audit trail data, with the credit card and e-mail and shipping. For some of the more controversial big brother stuff, e-mails were collected directly from the e-mail hosting companies, so that would bypass VPN security.

I understand how VPNs and SSL work. The point I was making is that if you are going to use a VPN, you have to trust the company that you get the VPN from.

"Hey, wouldn't it be cool if we made all these folks think they are getting a secure VPN, when in fact, we are storing all their data, unencrypted, instead of giving them the secure connection they think they are getting!"

As long as it was stored in a cool dry place, shouldn't be a problem.
A lot of the Mil-Surp 5.56 ammo is Vietnam War vintage and still shoots fine...however, that is center-fire ammo. I've also read of at least one WW II vintage 1911 which was still loaded and that old .45ACP fired OK too. Again, center-fire ammo.

I buy ammo online primarily from SGAmmo and Ammunition Depot and never had an issue.

To the OP who is also in Maine, I see 22LR @ kittery trading post on a very consistent basis.

Another vote for the old ammo is probably OK. If stored properly ammo can last a very long time. At worst I don't see much harm in trying some of the old rounds. Of course use the same caution you would excersie with any ammo to make sure it fires ,sounds normal, and the bullets are leaving the barrel. If you have a squib. Wait a minute, then carefully unload and check barrel for obstruction. Do they still make .22ammo? They say they do.:)
