I need a very small and light utility trailer that I can tow with my golf cart to haul garbage cans and such, nothing heavy. I've been looking for an aluminum trailer with high sides (about 3 ft tall) and a ramp tailgate that would have a 4 ft x 6 ft bed or smaller.

I haven't been able to find anything like that anywhere and wondered if anyone has heard of a trailer like that. By the way, I haven't found one in steel either. Do I need to have one custom built?

Thanks,
Rolando

Harbor Freight has a 40" x 48" and 48" x 96" flatbed trailers. Both have stake pockets, I believe. They have cheap ramps available too. Just search for "trailer" then "ramps" on their site.

Harbor Freight has a couple small trailers that would fit your needs / size. They aren't aluminum but are lightweight and could easily be towed by a golf cart, 4 wheeler, lawn tractor etc. One can even fold in half for easy storage in a garage. You can build your own removable sides for them. They're usually on sale for under $400. You should be able to search for them on their website.

My initial thought would be one of these kits from harbor Freight. They run somewhere around $200, and then you could addon sides. You could even get the side kits, they are removable and pretty inexpensive. I also have seen little trailers for lawnmowers and golfcarts. Not the ones that you pull with a golfcart but the ones you put a golf cart in.
Good luck, Dave

I have the HF 40 x 48 trailer with 8" tires. It's about 130 lbs with a plywood deck, 150 with sides added. I don't know if this is too heavy for your application.

HF has another small highway trailer 35" x 55", and even smaller trailers to use with a garden tractor. Search for 'trailer' on the following page:

Look at the pictures in California's post where he is unloading a disc from a trailer. I believe some HD's have been selling a trailer like he is using. They weigh around 600 or less lbs and could be towed by a lawn tractor of golf cart if not too heavily loaded. Can also go on the highway.

The harbor freight trailers mentioned, especially the folding one is light, and low to the ground and with stake bed type sides would hold what you want and not weight a whole lot. Plus, the folding feature is nice as it can be stored out of the way and out of the weather on end in your garage. And. they are cheap. With a 1/2" or 5/8" deck it will hold everything and not get too heavy. Inside storage would protect the deck from the weather.

I have a 44 X 54 utility trailer which I built in 1981 from a Builder's Emporium, (a long defunct box store chain in California) kit. It's been versatile, but the interior is pretty tight. For example, it won't quite take a washer and a drier together.

With mostly inside storage, I still have the solid original deck and sides and folding gate. I can pull it easily with my GT or my Jeep. It's gone cross country twice behind a VW Rabbitt. With this little trailer, I got by for 20 years without a pickup. Ownership cost per YEAR has been less than $25.00.
I wouldn't worry about the 8" wheels on these little trailers. My trailer has 11,000+ miles on the tires with no sign of tread wear. When loaded to 60 psi they carry 590 lbs each. When I tow my trailer on the highway empty, I lower the pressure to 35 - 40 psi or else it bounces on bumps.

Joe, you have a good eye. My larger trailer, the one in my sig photos, is the 4 x 8 from Home Depot. It weighs 500 lbs (400 with sides & ends removed), cost $600, GVW about 2050. You can extend the tongue and lay the front & rear flat to make a longer floor. One of the ends is a ramp.

I think the HD trailer is a little heavy for that golf cart assuming rough ground, but I highly recommend it for the pickup-substitute use you described.

My buddy has one of the HF trailers that he pulls behind his golf cart. He loads it with 3'~4' power pole cut-offs and several large bags of garbage and hauls it 3 miles to the dumpsters. Cute little trailer and it does a good job for him at an affordable price.

A friend of mine has one like it and uses it for everything. He tows it with an Astrovan.

If he's just hauling trash, it might not be too heavy for a golf cart. Electric motors have a lot of starting torque.

I like the versatility of a road worthy trailer that's not too heavy as it can be pulled by a GT or Golf Cart or on the Highway.

For a very short distance, I've towed a 6 X 10 loaded with brush probably weighint 1,500 - 2,000 lbs behind my 17 HP Toro 417 GT. I've towed my smaller 44" X 54" 180 lb trailer on my property behind the GT also without knowing it's there. Both trailers are a little wide for some places on my land so I'm looking at either a poly or small steel GT or ATV trailer.

My personal feeling if he's only going to buy one trailer, the lttle HF 40" X 48" is too small. Something like yours would be far more universal in usage.
