Does anyone know how to dis-asemble this?

, as a pickle fork is likely to tear the dust boot

and what's the problem with that? I've never taken a ball joint apart and NOT repalced the dust seal.

that's like rebuilding an engine and first draining the oil so you can reuse the old oil int he new engine?

really?

Actually if you have to disconnect it to get to something else, and don't have a need to buy a new one, it would make sense to me not to damage it...Come on dude

it's a VERY INEXPENSIVE wear item... like a gasket or crush washer on a drain plug.

if i remove something with a wear item.. it gets a new wear item. just because.

You can buy a multi pack of generic dust seals that come with a handfull of them for 4.99 at most auto parts stores in the 'help' section.

My opinion. yours may vary.

I've seen people cheap out on a non-price item and pay more / loose time later for doing so. Not worth it to me to do something twice because I was too cheap to put a near free part on while I had something apart.

If I give advice to others.. that's the advice I give. to err on safety side.

kinda like blowing a 4$ air filter out with a blow gun vs replacing it..and hoping you didn't contaminate the 'clean' side with dust when doing so... same mentality.

I'm ok if we disagree. you should be too. ;)

Fair enough, but for the record I would never reuse oil, or blow out a filter to get more miles out of it;-) I wouldn't change a boot that was still pliable and sealed for the simple fact that I wouldn't want a chance to introduce dirt or other contaminants into the ball joint/tie rod end. You are correct, it may be rather prudent to change, as most of the automotive ball joint failures I've seen could probably be contributed to a failed boot, but I myself wouldn't want to risk getting any of the poop from the outside, on the inside.

and that's why you'd clean it when you took it apart... then reassembled and lubed it. ;)

I'm gonna vote for at least cleaning and inspecting the boot for tears. I makes sense to repack it with fresh grease if a new boot isn't in the budget or readily available when doing the yob. However, the same joint is going back since it is not being removed to replace due to damage, just to provide access.
So you each get 5 points to use anyway you like in the bonus round! The question is : What is the difference between accuracy and precision? Tick tock... :) BTW, no cheating by looking it up on the net- I'll be watching from my NSA bunker!

you can be precise and not accurate.

if you are a sniper. i'll take acuracy.. only need 1 shot

DING! DING! DING! If you were a sniper who made, say 100 perfect shots, you would be BOTH accurate and precise, given that you only had one shot, but, in being only 1 sample, this could only be called accurate...
