To be honest, I have rented for the last couple of years. I usually get a 20ton log truck load and work it up myself. It took 2 days as hard as I could go, with a helper to process that log truck load of logs. I know all to well about trying to get it all done in one wkend. WHEW!.
I built a splitter back in the early 80's using a 4inch cyl and a 3gal min pump. That thing would shear wood sideways if that was what I wanted. I moved and sold the splitter since the house I bought didnt have a chimmely. I sold and moved again a few years ago into another house with full basement and woodstove. I am just now getting around to building another splitter. I simply like being able to work my wood when I want to and not when I have to.
I cobbled together a homemade splitter I bought for $75. It had a 6.5in x32inch stroke cyl on a very thin Ibeam that just isnt holding up to well. I used a PTO pump system off a longarm mower to supply the hydraulics. I dont know the flow or the pressure, but its way more than the Ibeam can handle with a 4way wedge. My intent was to try and get by this winter while i build a decent splitter, but so far I have spent more time welding on that durn thing than splitting. I finally gave up last wkend and started on my new splitter. I'll probably start a thread with pics once I get it all built. The only thing I will have to buy will be the 28gpm pump, ( I already have several single stage pumps I could use) I have 3- 25hp kholers setting around not being used, a 6x6hbeam, cylinders, and 1in plate, as well as the tank and control valves off the splitter I will be scrapping out. I will need to buy a coupling for the pump shaft and a few hyd hoses and then make the splitters fly.
