Forgive my ignorance on this issue. I (with help from other board members) figured out that my thermostart had a seperate button on the lower dash that operated the thermostart. Now I was wondering does my 1500 have glow plugs? What exactly is a glow pug and how does it differ from a non-glow plug diesel? Thanks, Joe

Glow plugs are plugs in each cylinder that glow and assist with cold starts. Some yanmars have them, others use a "thermostart" system (but even those with glow plugs list the key position as TS). Thermostart has one glow type plug and dumps raw fuel from a resevoir on to this plug (which is in the manifold) to start a small flame that prewarms the air for the cylinder. Most have a decompression lever which allows the engine to spin while not developing compression after the engine is spinning, you release the decompression lever--it gives the engine a running start to start combusting in cold conditions.
