Large Open station 2WD tractors are becoming dinosaurs. The only farms you see them on are the ones that are marginal.
I remember my neighbor telling me his first tractor of any sort(Oliver);it was a toss up between that and a new team of horses. Those were the days a farmer could do well milking 75-80 head. The only ones doing that now are the Amish.

Good for running a large square baler on level ground or some other mobile high HP pto load with a relatively low drawbar pull.

I think it all depends on what you are doing and the type of field conditions.

I have a neighbor that puts up a lot of round bales and I don't think they have ever had a 4X4 tractor. If the hay field is wet enough to need 4X4, it is probably too wet to be on it anyways. They don't do any ground engaging/tillage work. Even if you do tillage, it depends on how much and your ground conditions to decide if 4X4 will pay for you.

Under the right circumstances, a 2WD could be a big savings and there really is no reason to turn your back on that if it works for you.

IMHOP 4wd is the way to go. I am a very small landowner but I am considering selling my 2wd riding mower due to spinout on corners on the slopes and using the 4wd Kubota to do the mowing. It never damages the lawn.
I no longer own any cars or trucks that are 2wd. I have become spoiled by 4wd in all weather.

The advantage of 4wd over a 2wd is that your able to get much farther (into the mudhole) (away from the barn) (from help) before you get stuck.

that is where a strong back hoe helps. You can pick yourself up an work your way out, after making a huge mess of the field.

Anyone that considers RIO (return on investment) would only buy 4WD as down the line is where you'll lose out on 2wd.
Besides when financing the monthly payment difference will be hardly noticeable and that is not counting lost time for being stuck.
As to farming you can start earlier and work in wetter conditions all which is profits and or better crops.

I was in shooting the bull with my salesman friend at the Kubota dealer and he said its been longer than ten years since they had a new 2WD on their lot. Nobody has the time to fool around with 2WD anymore. Just pull the lever and normally you will stay out of trouble.

When you go to the field too early when it's too wet it contributes greatly to soil compaction. The reason to get 4wd is for pulling power, you can get a machine with less hp to do the job as long as the weight is there.
