Dog gone question??

If you do offer her any money remind her that "All sales are final" and that she initially said "to keep the pup, it was [y]ours and she wanted no money". Then you can take the high road and offer her half and tell her that you won't even charge her kennel fees while Copper was with you.

It sounds like she wants Copper back because she has figured you will be making money from the pups and that doesn't sit well with her (dog-in-the-manger attitude, eh!) but I'm a cynic so...

You don't know what is going on in her home life. Perhaps she is getting bugged by others on how SHE could be breeding the pup and all the $$ she is missing out on.

Explain to her she gave the pup up to SOMEONE that SOMEONE could have moved to Uganda and the pup is GONE.

Or offer to give her a discount on the going boarding rate for a pup. Around here it's $25/night.

Do what is right for the dog. It is now your dog.

This ^^^

From what I am reading, while the dog is not mistreated, it is not being treated well. The fact the woman gave up the dog after a year is all I would need to know.

  • If she gave up the dog once, will she did it again?
  • What is best for the dog?
  • Should the dog be a Yo Yo because this woman wants a puppy, no longer wants the dog, gives up the dog and then wants it back?

The dog deserves better.

Later,
Dan

Tell the former owner that you now have about twenty guys on TBN who have dibs on the dog and that she can get to the back of the line.

Good idea! Haha

The problem is that if she decided to give up the dog again, she'd never tell you. Stick to your guns and do what's best for the dog.

I know none of us know the OP or the woman involved...we can only make opinions based upon the posts here.
That said, I would not return the pup. Not only are you attached to the pup, it's apparent the previous owner wasn't...even when we had our occasional money problems, our dog (boxer named Bella) is treated like family (except she doesn't put money into the pot...but what price does one put on love?).

So, do what's best for the dog..that's the main thing.

This dog thread is breaking a cardinal rule on TBN. No picture, no dog. Sorry, no exceptions. We need a photo of "Red" wearing antlers and a red nose in time for Christmas.

I'm with the "don't give the dog back" group. I got my GSD, a rescue, about 5 months ago because the first owner didn't want it anymore and wasn't training it properly. Sammie, my GSD, is a great dog and is now trained very well. A local trainer charges $1,600 to get a dog properly trained. (Actually, they train the owners to train the dog.) I wouldn't give her back no matter how much their kids may want her or how guilty they might feel about giving it up. Sammie is part of our family now. She sleeps in our bedroom, she goes where we go, she plays with us, you get the point.

If you have to keep the peace (so to speak) offer a couple of hundred dollars but I would keep the dog.

Good luck.

It wouldn't let me post a picture from camp, sorry all out of reindeer antlers n glow in the dark noses!

One in the back is the mama, Rosie, middle is Copper, my new dog!, and the puppy was one from the second litter I held for a few extra weeks for a friend.

Gorgeous dogs!

I am sitting here looking at our eight month old Airedele, and I could not possibly conceive of giving him up, nor could I have done it even 2 weeks after we got him.

I agree with the others. She is probably a bad owner anyway, she does not deserve the dog, and she has no legal right to the pup.

Obviously, looking into your heart, you cannot give her up at this point. So, in my view, the only issue is the logistics of handling the local politics when you tell her she can't have the dog.

It would probably help if you explain to her that you could not possibly give up the dog at this time given your emotional connection with her. Then, it's up to you how much you need to bribe her in order to keep the peace and maintain your reputation around town.

Good luck to you. I do not envy your position.

If Tuna's a good actor, I'd suggest having a little personal chat with the ex owner and starting to tear up at the thought of giving up Copper. Blubbering would be good too. A little acting would probably save you from needing to refund any money but still preserve your community standing. Women love men who can cry over something like giving up a dog. Fair play IMO as she is tugging at your heartstrings too.

Whichever approach he takes with this flakey former owner, devious or straightforward, he should keep the dog.

That's a great photo!
