Ron - Don't let the folks who just bought EarthForce machines see this... You might need to call on the services of both of those dogs. Great machine... And a bit newer than mine...'65 977 track loader and a '73 225 excavator... I think that I might have Cat envy.

As it sits it weighs 16,500 lbs. 80 HP turbo diesel. The bucket is 1.31 yards. It has a torque converter with a shuttle shift. 6,240 lb lift capacity. 9,530 lb breakout force. Will dig 14 1/2 feet, 18 feet with extenda-hoe. 43 GPM hydraulic. Needless to say, I am very pleased with this machine.

There is an auction down in Ohio that has around 5-6 Ford industrial tractors with booms mounted on the end of the loader with chains hanging from that. I have seen them carrying Ford and MF tractors by wrapping the chains around the belly and taking off. Easier to unload off of trailers. These industrial tractors are definitly strong.

One of the critical criteria is the craning capacity of the backhoe. Newer septic regulations call for larger septic tanks. Since a backhoe is one of the most common machines used by septic companies, the manufacturers beefed up the craning capacities of the newer backhoes. In my case I need to clear land, excavate for two foundations, build a septic system, dig trenches for water and electric, put in perimeter drains, dig for cistern, unload trucks, rebuild stone walls, possibly dig out for a pond and any other odd job that comes up. There are machines that can probably do many of these jobs more efficiently but I think this machine will be able to do 90% of what I need to do. I expect to bring in a dozer to do some of the initial work. See my post in Construction Equipment under New or Used.

I look at it like a hammer. If I were setting brads in fine furniture I wouldn't use a 20 oz serrated framing hammer. If I'm doing framing I certainly wouldn't want to use a 12 oz hammer , nor would I want to use a 4 pound drilling hammer. It's all relative. There are machines that would toss my machine over the mountain. They probably wouldn't be much good for digging the trench for the water line. I thought long and hard about it and expect to get my money's worth out of this machine. If I were buying a house that were already built and landscaped I would get a much smaller CUT. 15 years ago I had a Ford 1910 with fel, auxillary hydraulics, Woods 750 backhoe, and a one bag concrete mixer. The machine was excellent for landscaping, snow removal, and small construction jobs. I wouldn't want to do the work with it that I intend to do with the Cat. For the work I intend to do I believe this was the best compromise. I'll know better in a couple of years if I was a fool. I'll keep everyone apprised. Pacem.

The hammer comparison is apt. Given the extent of the work you have planned, my Power Trac 1845 wouldn't cut it, but once you get several acres of lawn built, I'll be happy to challenge you to a mowing contest.
One great thing about your rig and building projects is that you get to shop in a few years for the smaller hammers. (Lawnmower plus wheelbarrow size fel.)
