Dog injury question...(any vets here or other experience?)

My dog had a nail issue, you could tell because he licked it a lot and it became red and swollen. As long as there is some nail left I would monitor it and if it starts getting red and puffy then bring her in. Mine was on antibiotics for awhile for it. My other dog has broken a nail with no issues, it just grew out.

Zzvyb6 has some good info there. I recently bought cutters with a built in stop, it's so much quicker to cut the nails that hopefully I can get my dogs to not run when it's time.

I've had 2 different vets tell me to use exclusively enteric coated aspirin for dogs. .

They were wrong. Or maybe you meant buffered aspirin. Enteric coated does not dissolve properly if at all in a dogs digestive tract, it is different than a humans. Many vets recommend buffered aspirin.
Google it if you don't believe it.

One of our dogs has torn a dew claw just about off several times...a trip to vet, a little novocaine (or whatever they use on dogs) and off comes the claw. They always grow back, wish they didn't.

When my first lab broke off a toenail it never grew back. She seemed to be in pain for 5 minutes and then not a whimper.

But she was a big, tough dog. Lab friendly with all people, but she could take a stick or a ball away from any dog around...

Aspirin is OK, NEVER tylenol or other NSAIDS. Aspirin must not be enteric coated as dogs cant dissolve the coating.

Enteric is OK if you cut them in halve first. Two of mine get an 81 mg every day for bum knee. Dogs appear to do as well as when on the prednisone.

From the internet (where else? :D)
Enteric coated aspirin will not dissolve until it passes through the stomach and into the small intestine.

* The information below regarding enteric coated aspirin has been presented at the ACVIM (American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine) and published in literature for students.

Enteric coating of aspirin has become popular in human products but is a problem in animals and creates unpredictable absorption. It becomes dangerous when the dog's GI tract accumulates enteric coated aspirin tablets which do not digest in the stomach and instead collect in the intestines until a toxic dose is reached resulting in aspirin toxicity.

To avoid this disaster, use either aspirin made specifically for pets or aspirin with a powdery covering "buffered" rather than the "hard candy" type enteric coating.

An enteric coating is a barrier applied to oral medication that controls the location in the digestive system where it is absorbed. Enteric refers to the small intestine, therefore enteric coatings prevent release of medication before it reaches the small intestine.

Most enteric coatings work by presenting a surface that is stable at the highly acidic pH found in the stomach, but breaks down rapidly at a less acidic (relatively more basic) pH. For example, they will not dissolve in the acidic juices of the stomach (pH ~3), but they will in the higher pH (above pH 5.5) environment present in the small intestine.
Also from another site:
The currently recommended dosage of aspirin varies a little from publication to publication but it is between 5 and 15mg/lb every 12 hours.
Since there is a range a person could pick the middle of it and go for about 10mg/lb every 12 hours.

Don't ever give a dog aleve, tylenol, etc. Only aspirin. I did this once in the past and ended up poisoning our dog. The vet prescribed baby aspirin but since we didn't have any in the house I used Aleve instead. Something I will forever regret.
