OK, this is really off topic, but I know that we have a lot of dog lovers here and some very inventive minds. I just got a new dog that loves squeaky toys, but also has the ability to crush the squeaker within minutes. I know that you can buy new squeakers and stick them in the toys, but they only last a couple of minutes, too. Has any one found a way to protect the squeaker so the dog's teeth can't puncture it or deform it enough so that the little bellows doesn't reinflate?

One thing I was thinking of doing was to put some kind of webbing or leather on either side, like a big sandwich. Naturally I don't want to use anything that can harm the dog. Another idea would be to use some thick kind of thick fleece in layers, but that might not stop the teeth from penetrating to the squeaker.

This is a picture of a typical squeaker (new).

The squeekers in heavy canvas toys with lots of holofill stuffed in them seem to last the best. We also have a heavy canvas cover for plastic drink bottles -- our dog loves the crackle sound:p

Does your dog really 'love' the squeaker, or is it 'killing' it? If it's killing, then your dog will be very persistent.

I like the leather idea. If you could get your hands on some thick tanned cowhide and sew a pouch to slip the squeak bladder into, that might work.

Tandy Leather Factory - Home would be a place to start. The leather should be safe for the dogs mouth, it might develop a taste for shoes :D:D

My Labs love bottles too.. I remove the lids so they wont swallow them, that's my concern with most dog toy's... Best I have been able to find is the tennis balls with a squeaker, The squeaker last a little longer, but not much. Still got the ball though..

Our dog (see avator) used to go through squeakers often. Now that she is over 4 years old squeakers seem to last a long time. She still plays with them a lot, but they last until it's time to replace the toy. Maybe her teeth are not as sharp or she just plays with different. She does not play with toys that do not have squeakers very often.

Our dogs use as squeaker toy whatever unfortunate animal crosses the fence; thats the trouble with airedales. Anything on the property is fair game and if there is none, than they chew each other or the great pyrenese.
But after the horse refused the big red ball with handle it is one of their favorite toys.
Also Kong toys seem to be holding up fairly well.

I thought this was a pretty good idea, so I went to the local Tandy leather place. They were nice enough to give me about a square foot of heavy scrap leather. I cut out a 4"x4" piece, punched edge holes and folded it over the squeaker like a little leather taco and laced around the perimeter.

Right now it is in the jaws of my chief tester - I'll let you know how it works.

My attempt to use two slices off a tennis ball as a cover lasted about 5 minutes. :D

Good Luck, I just had an after thought, your dog might want to swallow the leather, which probably isn't good. Our dogs get those rawhide things all good and slobbered up, then swallow them. Always afraid of an intestinal blockage.
