Huskies are the exact opposite. They love to be out in the snow and cold.
Huskies have a multilayered coat made for the cold.

The black mouth cur has a very thin single layer coat. My BMC probably shed the most hair of any dog I've owned, which I always thought was strange for such a thin coat. I swear he went through a full coat every month.

German Shepherds are great dogs. Very intelligent and loyal. I'd have one, but I've heard they don't tolerate the heat very well.

The black mouth cur I had was definitely a warm weather dog and couldn't stand cold weather. Their coat isn't very thick and they have a bald belly. It wasn't unusual to see him lying out in the sun, even on a 95 degree day. You'd watch him rotate between the shade and a spot in the full sun throughout the day.
We've had German Shepherds for many years, with a variety of coats and personalities, but every single one of them adored lying flat out on the deck in the full California sun any time of the year. I joke that they were baking the fleas out, but they don't actually have fleas. Ticks are a different story.

Compared to some other folks here, we have had a quiet life them. That said they were/are all protection dogs, and could go like greased lightning when they thought there was a problem. We have had them take off to run down 400lb feral sows and we have seen one take off for no apparent reason, sprint uphill and hit an unseen (by us) coyote hard enough to send the coyote flying 25-30 feet. That fight was over before it started. It's funny: she likes/tolerates most coyotes, but hates that particular one for some reason.

I have every confidence that they would rise to the occasion if they were ever called upon, and I hope it doesn't happen. Our first was a sweet little thing, barely up to breed size. Her first owner wasn't sure that the dog was up to protecting anyone, and had a big guy (padded) jump the first owner in a parking lot. Apparently, the dog had the guy down before anyone knew what had happened.

All the best,

Peter

I've had 2 German Shepherds over the years, the first was air scent search trained, the second a beloved pet. Any dog can step up when the need arises... I came home unexpectedly one night and our "beloved pet" bristled, down low, growling at me from across the room. She was an instant away from charging me before I said something to her.
Our current dog is a chocolate lab... She's also a great dog, but at 7 years old, she's still very hyper.

Years ago a friend's FIL had a Chihuahua, or one of those other lap dogs. He would hold the dog and have you play-slap the owner, making the dog growl and snap at you. Then he'd hand you the dog and do the same thing, causing the dog to growl and snap at him. No loyalty whatsoever, that dog was just afraid of getting dropped! :D

Our Belgian Malinois was imported from Europe and trained as a drug detection dog. Yet, he was given up for adoption. We did have him evaluated and yes, he could indeed sniff out drugs. Turned out that he had his own agenda if off leash. He was also trained to protect his handler. I always wear my combo hardhat/headphone/face shield when I weed whack. I was out whacking one day when my wife came around the corner with "Oscar". He absolutely let me know not to come any closer. I have heard that sometime the breed "needs a job" but in the house he was perfect, spending hours with a rope toy. Oscar and our French Beauceron got along well. About half way through our walks, I would unleash him as we got to a down hill area with thick grass. He would slide down that hill head first on his back. Sadly, his hips went.

I have always affiliated that with the smarter breeds. They get bored just like people do, and need something to keep them occupied.

My fox hound mix is similar in shedding to bmc. He loves sunning his belly in warm weather

Years ago I pulled off the interstate for fuel and noticed an older gent and one of the store employees trying to get a rather overweight pug. He wasn't going far, just wouldn't get close enough for them to grab him with that tight skin. I got fuel, moved away from the pump and headed inside. On my way in they explained that the dog had gotten out of the car, slipped it's collar, and they couldn't get him.
I went inside, bought whatever I'd gone in for, when I came out they still hadn't had any luck. # this, I said. I walked over to my truck, opened the door and told my dog "go get him," thinking that if she engaged him in play somebody might be able to grab him.
Instead she went over to mooch treats from the clerk. The pug went over and sniffed her butt; the clerk grabbed the pug and everybody was happy.
I don't think that 30 seconds passed from the time she jumped out of the truck until the other dog was captured.

Back when I was married I had a male Cocker Spaniel named Brandy. We went to Cleveland to visit her sister and husband. One day there a guy comes to visit, my Cocker is sleeping on the other side of the room, he gets up walks over to this guy and pi$$es on his leg. I apologized to the guy and later he left. I said sorry about that to my brother in law, he said it was ok, because they didn't like him anyways. Brandy never did that before or after that time. Makes you wonder what dogs are able to sense.

Wife comes home one day and said that her work friend wants to give us a 9 month old pure bred German Shepard named Hans. He was black and tan with long hair, which I hadn't seen before. We lived in the Detroit suburbs and went up to the UP of Michigan to visit our parents with the dogs at Christmas time. We were at my parents house where I live now, it was 20 below and 30-40 mph winds, wicked cold. House was too warm with wood heat and Hans wanted outside, so I put him out, then completely forgot about him for several hours. Went outside to see if he was ok, he's sitting on the porch in a foot of snow. I asked him if he's ok, he turns his head like what do you want and goes back to sitting enjoying the cold.

I grew up with Lab and I love them too, they are so easy to train for hunting, it's simply natural for them...

As a kid I went to the chicken coop to pick up the eggs as I walk out of the barn I drop one egg our lab at the time was walking next to me and caught that egg mid air with its mouth without breaking it...always thought it was incredible.

I currently have a lab and a golden retriever / border colie mix. The lab I can bring anywhere not so much the other one, he his dominant, protective and grumpy type, despite his stubbornness he listen very well. I trust him around people but don't trust people around him if that make sense, he his not vicious by any means but he his particular on who he let touch him. He never bit anyone but he will warn you more then once and each time more obvious but I don't trust people to listen to these warnings... I always want/try to bring them along but often leave the golden behind for these reasons....

A few weeks ago I went to see my cousin at his cabin, since it was in the bush and didn't expect too many people to be there I brough them both. I wasn't there too long and one of my other cousin show up with his kids and their dog. Their dog is not train very well and is a attention freak plus all he wants to do is play, he is pretty obsess. I made the introduction between them outside without anyone around, it went well other then my dog had to show him he was the dominant one. I made it clear to everyone, A don't touch my dog and B no fetching no balls no nothing. I told my dog to sit and stay next to me (I didn't bring a leash, bad owner I know) but he is obedient so he stayed without issue and everything was perfectly fine other then my cousin dog was really annoying because he couldn't play. In order to shut his dog up my cousin started telling me ''poor dog,(implying mine) they are good let him be'' I was like no he his fine where he his, there's too many people and if I let them be they will get in the mix of us and they will fight by jealousy or protection for us, so for your dog and everyone safety he will stay where he is ...he wasn't letting it go and kept bugging me, then the F**** started telling me its not a big deal if it happen plus I think my dog would win anyways ... I was blown away, I laugh and was like I've never seen my dog loose the upper hand (believe me I wish he would maybe it would smart him up) and are we organizing a dog fight is that what is happening right now ?? at that point I left... like I said I trust my dog I just don't trust people around my dog.

I always get the one person come over and say ho nice dog can I pet him ? I say no he is particular so don't. Then they insist, it's fine I am a dog person… I have to argue with them...how exhausting, sometime I fell like just letting it happen but I know how it would turn around against me so quick.
