I hav the task upon me to remove the top 6" of dirt from the area where my dog pens are and thefeced in area around it so that I can remove hook worms annd whip worms and their eggs from the soil. There is no spray that will do the trick, the only way is to remove the top 6" of topsoil and spread lime and replace with new dirt. We are robbing the replacement dirt form where the garden is, yes I care enough about my dogs to take te garend out to get the replacement dirt, plus it is close and I can get it done quick this way.

The question I have is will the worms get inot the garden produce in the future if I take the "contaminated" dirt and put it where the garend is? The worms will always exist if conditions are right: conditions are any compost and moisture, so basically anywhere. I woudl hate to do this and then have hook worms in my squash or cucumbers (since they lay on the ground).

My garden has earth worms in it...grubs...all kinds of insects...I fertilize with cow manure..chicken manure...who knows what is in that stuff and I never even give it a second thought.. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Regarding the contaminated soil being used in the garden: My concern isn't the worm eggs or worms, it's the dog fecal matter and potential ecoli, salmonella etc. contamination of produce when you garden again. I believe someone told me that you can never use manure from "meat eaters" in a garden for this reason. I don't know if it's true or if this helps you.

A good dose of "Sevin" or "Diazinon" and watering it in won't kill the eggs, larvae and worms?

Risk of incidence is low, health consequences are high, so decide how lucky you feel. It's not just your food that you have to worry about. As you handle and walk in the contaminated soil it can find its way into your body either from ingestion, breathing or through skin. Washing the produce in a mild bleach solution is a good precaution regardless of how it's grown. Personally I'd leave the meat eater composting kit in the closet with the emergency brain surgery kit.

I would ask your extension office (or vet) what to do with that contaminated soil. Maybe use it as the base of your burn pile and then have a few gigantic fires to sterilize it.

Sunshine will kill the eggs..... Just keep turning the soil.. Rototill it once a week for a couple months and the soil will be good as new.....No gurantee that the garden soil is free of parasite eggs anyway.....

How about pouring concrete under the pens?

The 4 pens are on a 20' x 20' concrete pad, inside of an area that is 80' x 80' so I can let them out and work with em or whatever for a little while, or just let them run and not have to worry about them getting in the road.
I had a bobcat at the house the other day and did alot of the dirt removal and spread lime as the vet recommended.
Saturday i borrowed a dump truck and a front end loader and went to work loading dirt and dumping it in ditches. Towards the back of the farm there are a few magical ditches (you know the deep kind that you just keep adding stuff to it and it never seems to fill up). Anyway that and a few areas that needed some dirt added are getting dirt added now.
Compact tractors are nice, easier to manaever in tight areas and such, but man they are unstable creatures. I really wish the one I have been using had a hydro transmission and a little wider stance to it, it would be a lot nicer.
