Ok so I have a cylinder that was donated for the Log Splitter project. This thing is BIG and HEAVY. It says it is a 5 inch bore and I'm measuring the rod to be 3.5 inches diameter with a 20.5 in stroke. All in all I think this would be perfect but..... There are a few concerns I have and would like opinions on it.

My concerns are :
1. Not sure if it works or not and since I don't yet have the splitter hydraulics built I have no good way to test it.
2. Cant find any real info on it on the web so if it doesn't work can I get a kit to rebuild it
3. For the massive size, the tag says its rated for 1500 psi ????. Could this be right given its mass ? With this rating should I even bother ? And did I mention that this thing is freaking heavy.

Here is the tag info:
Lincoln Machine Company Incorporated
Model: C-17020
Bore: 5 inches
Stroke: 20.5 inches
Pressure: 1500

Anybody know anything about these cylinders ???
Take a look at the pictures and let me know your thoughts.

1500 psi is fine, standard for CUT's

the issue i would have is its going to take a metric butt ton of hydraulic flow to have any decent cycle time.

if i did my math right you need to push something like 1.8 gal of fluid into that cylinder. it should generate something in the
neighborhood of 14-15 ton

you can operate it on compressed air for trial cycles.

Thanks for the responses. I'll consider that cylinder suggestion, it probably weighs half as much and works twice as good. I'm curious, What are the calculations for figuring out the extend, retract, and ton numbers ?

Thanks,

Go here Surplus Center - Hydraulic Cylinders Pumps Motors

Select tech help at top left.

Select Calculators, then force & speed

Enter the numbers.

I agree with JJ buy a cylinder. If you ever need to repair that old one you will need to take out a loan. Most cut systems run at 2000 to 2500psi also. CJ

I agree to get a cylinder.

And if it is clearly stamped 1500psi (and it is), dont second guess that. They give them the pressure rating for a reason. While you "may" never have an issue, since there is no shock loads, what if you do? and worse yet, what if you sell it and someone else has issues??

Thanks J_J for the link to that hidden jem of information. Much appreciated.

Might want to commit pertinent formulas and constants to memory in order to inhibit the formation of complacency. V = 3.14(rxr)H, 231cu in/G, 60s/min.
