A LT=light truck tire, load range "E" no further discussion.

I second the LT's more money, more life.

I have had good luck with car tires on my trailer.

just to clarify car tires as in a P205/75 or an LT (light truck) tire?

I have heard of ppl using the LT in place of ST tires, since the LT has stiffer sidewalls similar to the ST.

Years back we had horrible experience with some ST camper tires (3 blowouts within a year, causing $700 in damage. Carlisle tires but mfg by Goodyear - who paid the damage claim).. Researching trailer tires I found that most MFG list the MAX speed for trailer tires as 55 mph (at least at that time, 2003ish).. The concept is the faster you go, the hotter the tire gets, the faster it breaks down..

I find that hardly no one that actually drives 55, even pulling.. I wonder how many/if any ST tire problems would go away if we followed the 55mph rule?

thatguy....only experience I have had with Carlisle tires was on a Deere garden tractor back in Y2K...most worthless tires I had prior to the Duros I mentioned in the OP. As for your asking about tire problems going away if we drove 55 mph....I may be wrong here, but I think PROPERLY inflated tires wouldn't heat up enough to shorten the service life.

I totally agree.. a LOT of ppl never actually check the air pressure in their tires, they just give them a casual glance.. When we had our camper I made sure they were inflated correctly before every trip - but still had 3 carlisles blow out :-(

This is what i found on the 'discount tire' website - looks like the max ST speed is now 65 - for anyone that is interested

Trailer Tire Facts - Discount Tire

Speed
All "ST" tires have a maximum speed rating of 65 mph.
As heat builds up, the tire's structure starts to disintegrate and weaken.
The load carrying capacity gradually decreases as the heat and stresses generated by higher speed increases.

I use a set of four tire minders on my trailers (screw on the valve stem type). They transmit to the vehicle temp and pressure. Since I only have 4, I have to move them from trailer to trailer which is a little inconvenient but I think they are fantastic. I have had two flats on my 12K equipment trailer (rocky roads) and they give instantaneous feedback to the driver what is going on.
The reason I bring this up is they monitor temperature as well. I tow upward of 65-70 ( not on the rocky road but the highway) and see no temperature that would create a tire problem. Matter a fact, a warm day in the sun sitting still will bring the temp higher than 6 hours of towing at 50 degree OAT at 70 mph.

Good Year Marathons on all my trailers.. Never let me down.. Some are 8-10 yrs old. No cracks.. I have looked at other trailer tire brands and they seem like synthetic plastic type of rubber. Not sure what it is.. LT tires would surely work on larger trailers but my boat trailer would look odd with them if you could even get a 14" ?

My 1987 Toyota 1 ton came with 14" 8 ply rating Bridgestones. I used that model for a few tire changes. I got some generic 8 ply rating 14" tires for the last set. Truck was then totalled.
