You might want to use the chain and padlock routine on the steering wheel. We used to do that in the Army.

A better choice might be using a cable like they use for motorcycles. It won't stop a determined thief, but it will slow them down a bit.

The longer it takes for a thief, the more the chance that they will give up. Unfortunately some will go into the vandal mode when they get too frustrated.

Good luck,

Don

I chain my fourwheeler to the front of my FEL with a logging chain but that is only secure as a pair of bolt cutters will allow it to be. I agree that it will stop the casual thief but that is about all.

Several years ago I lost a 25 hp outboard boat motor off my jon boat to thieves. I had it padlocked to the transom but a pair of bolt cutters and one snip and it was gone. I just would not feel too secure with a chain/cable and padlock on my tractor.

Here is what some of my backwoods neighbors in Ark. use as an alarm for their car. Might work on your tractor, too. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

If you live within 1000 ft. of the neighbor install a wireless alarm transmitter with a receiver at your house tied to your burglar alarm panel.

Not sure it's worth it but it seems that it shouldn't be that hard to replace the existing ignition switch with one that is at least uniquely keyed.

Again, not sure it's worth it except for a bit more safety from the kids etc.

NH like most tractor companies use the same key so that a farmer doesn't have to carry twenty different keys to use his tractors. You can buy MF keys down at TSC for a couple dollars and they are almost identical to the Ford/NH keys. I am glad they are all the same as I have lost a couple and would hate to have to wait a month for a new key to be made or to have to swap the ignition. I now have 5 keys for my TN as everytime I leave it at the dealer they put another key in it for me so I have a collection. Just imagine if you lost one of your keys for your tractor and it was a special cut key then before you can get that one replaced your kid runs off with the other key. Now you can not use your tractor till the key comes in from the dealer or your kid tells you where he hid the other one. Take care.

Robert,

What you say makes sense and I kinda figured that was the logic behind the way tractor keys are made. I am sure that for decades the needs of the average farmer have been put first in the manufacture, sale and service of farm tractors, including the convenience of using generic keys. It is a shame that we live in times where extra measures have to be taken in order to keep what is ours from being stolen. I guess the best way one can protect their investment is to lock it up in a building if they have one. Unfortunately, I don't have a building (yet) so I try to block my tractor in with my truck or car and always chain my fourwheeler to it. So far that has worked for me.
