Double acting cylinder, which port is extend?

I was wondering which port on the cylinder is the extend port, I am thinking the cap end? I have a tie rod cylinder for a splitter and I want to try to get it hooked up correctly on the first try. My valve has a detent on the return stroke.

It should be opposite of the end the piston comes out.

Try to visulize the inside of the cylinder or look for a cross section of a cylinder. Think of the rod end like a donut inside of a paper cylinder. When oil is supplied in one end it will fill the cavity up. That results in the donut being pushed along the tube which causes the rod to extend. If you are going to play in hydraulics you have to see the action in your mind when you put pressurized in equipment.

I dont think the air would hurt it Ive done that its sort of scarey as it seems to built up and the bang the rod pops out quite fast....

JUST DON'T USE OXYGEN or you will have a 1 cycle diesel engine
The O2 and the oil in the cylinder under pressure will detonate with the pressure and explode.
