The tractors are on rubber. Perhaps there is road surfacing etc. that does not take kindly to metal tracks.

These tractors can also pull a lot but go faster on the haul.

The biggest thing with the 9400 series and STX scrapper tractors is they have a great resale value compared to a standard scrapper and are faster and I think cheaper. Most contractors use these scrapper setups now but very few get a wheeled STX. Almost every STX scrapper tractor is a quad track so must be this guy didn't want tracks for some reason.

Robert & Egon... I guess flexibility is the real key to the value of the tractor over the normal scraper/earthmover. Most of the earthmovers I see working on projects also have the powered "blades" (for lack of the proper tech. term) that dig just in front of the bed and load material into the earthmover as they travel forward. I've never seen anything like this on one of these dirtpans, probably because of the high hydraulic flow required or the plumbing/control nightmare that would have to be connected/unconnected from the tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

That word " flexibility " is the best description.

The self loading or elevating scrappers may just be more expensive than a tractor and pan for both initial cost, operating efficiency and versitility pulling other equipment.

Hey guys,
I am a subsrciber to Heavy Equipment News, a magazine that discusses this subject very often. It seems that earthmoving contractors are using this kind of equipment because of the reasons that several of you already outlined. They are cheaper, and more versatile. I have read some articles saying that they can save the contractors several cents per cubic yard over elevating scrapers. When you are moving millions of cubic yards of dirt the saving adds up pretty quick. They also look really cool. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I like tractor pans ok but Im a die hard motor scraper man lol. Some jobs they arent suited for very well. I worked for an outfit that had several and they were matchedto the pans they pulled. The mechanic kept a trailer load of axle parts with him. plus the manuverability of them inst qui as good. They used them in Huntsville where its not so rocky then took them to Barton in solid rock. We had channels of soil for them to work between the rocks but the pull pans were too wide and stayed hung up. They drove them from Missouri to Huntsville and wore out a set of tires. THey do have several percks but theres nothin like listening to a heard of TS14 and 24 with Detroits. One thing I had troubls with the tractors was grading building pads when the front of the tractors dips down it lifts the bowl up a good bit. On a 2 wheeled scraper the wheels will raise the bowl up but its not as great a lift an its easier to see the bowl. Most folks use lasers but alot of times they seem to be a big problem on some jobs Ive worked one. I guess Im an odd ball lol Take care Taylor Lambert
