Ran across this PHD searching the web and this is a very interesting unit.I like the hydraulic down pressure. Has anyone seen or used this.Maybe we could make one. It's made by Hodge industries in Australia.

Looks very simple, could also be done with a manual cylinder like on an engine hoist and if you have one already, you could borrow it with no additional expense.

They make a kit for it but I have yet to need one, usually if it stops digging it is because something is in the hole. Remember this is a drill it pulls itself into the ground. If it isn't it is because there is something there or the tip is dull or broken

In Arizona, the caliche is so hard, that a 6" dia. bit will sit and spin until it makes a shiny spot. We have to make a starter hole with a pickaxe and add water to get the bit started. Keep adding water while drilling and 20 minutes later we will have a 3' deep hole.

That downpressure kit looks a lot more serious than the ones that come from Land Pride. Of course, if it can lift the tractor's rear, it's adequate.

We have a cilica cemented hardpan called durapan. Thickness varies from 4'-16'. It's water impermeable. Augers have to have carbide fishtail tips (usually Pengo) and the PHD has to have downpressure.
