I ordered my camera online from Abes of Maine. But before you can even start to order a camera, you need to determine what camera to buy. One thing you definitely want is a USB connection. Size, features, price, etc. will all be personal decisions.

Check out DPreview.com for an excellent resource to pinpoint the camera(s) that would fit your needs.

Plower, I have an Olympus D-460Zoom camera and it came with its own software. One of the options is to "resize" so you can cut a picture down to any size you want.

Rick, I have Microsoft Picture It! and it looks like a real fine program if it worked. My instructions also say to click on "options" 'cept there ain't none. My menu bar at the top only has "File" and "Help". I haven't figured that one out yet.

You first need to load a file. Once loaded, you get more menu items. The Options... selection is then under the View Menu.

Thanks, Dave, I'll have to try to different things with files. I had opened a blank page to try to make a collage and then opened 3 pictures I wanted, but never found anything else on the menu bar.

My wife has MS-Picture It! on her PC. I have not used it, but I did run it to find the answer to your Options question.

I, on the other hand, use Paint Shop Pro (same as GlueGuy does). You can go to their website and download a FREE demo version that will work for 30 days. After that you would have to buy it if you want to continue using it. It is a very comprehensive program, so you may be alittle over whelmed at first. I have been using it for many years now. I bought my wife the Paint Shop Pro book from Barnes and Noble which is a much better teacher than I am. She is starting to get the hang of it.

As long as we are discussing software and pictures. I highly recommend the Ulead Photo Explorer Pro for viewing pictures you take with a digital camera. You can also get a FREE demo version from their website. It allows you to pull the pictures off your digital camera, create slide shows, print images, auto rename of file(s), describe your pictures, and many other features.

Given your new computer (at which you have become, by now, truly expert; right?!), I assume you have "PictureIt! 2000" or '99. Once you get a picture open by doing either file/open or clicking on one of the options on the "home page" which PictureIt loads, then you can either do "file/save as" at which point you get "options" as an option, or you can right-click and get a pretty complete menu which includes a save-as sub-menu. The right-click gives you a lot of choices which the menu bar does not. To do your collage, do "file/new blank picture" then "done" (at the bottom left) then "add something" then picture" then drill up or down through the C: drive directory structure to find a picture, add it, do it again, etc. In classic Microsoft fashion, IMHO, the program is not especially intuitive, but if you're not one of the lucky stiffs with Photoshop, it's not too bad once you get used to its navigation foibles. Is the collage for us?

I like to use a program called Irfanview. It is free, and is a pretty good graphics viewer/editor. In many of these programs, the option you are looking for is called resize / resample. The way to make a picture smaller is to either make it a smaller size (the viewable area), use a smaller color depth (the number of different colors each pixel could be) or to use a higher compression. You should be able to get your pictures down to around 80k with a size of 640X480 and a JPG compression of about 7 (on a scale of one to ten, ten being the largest file size, and one being the smallest). You only want a USB camera, if you have USB port, AN OS that supports USB (NT does not)
