That is the gross HP, The PTO rating is about 14hp correct? You are not concerned about this? )</font>

I wouldn't be concerned, I had a 60"mmm and a 48" rotary cutter on the BX1800 with no problem, with the rotary cutter I was knocking down trees up to 1 1/2" and the BX didn't hardly blink.

I don't know how CHP rates their equipment, however, their 3 pt chipper is the same model as their tow along with the 16HP Briggs & Strtton gas engine on it. Before purchasing my Kubota, I has a Bolens with a 16 HP Briggs and I can tell you there is a world of difference in power between it and my Kubota. The Kubota runs the chipper very well and seems to suit my needs. I know that a Valby or Bearcat would handle larger materials and have more power but I can't justify the cost. Renting in my area requires a 20-40 mile round trip depending on who has a chipper available when I want to use it so having the smaller chipper available whenever I feel like chipping and the weather is cooperating is certainly easier than waiting for the opportunity to rent a larger unit.

I had a 12HP DR Chipper and found it to be quite capable for cleaning up smaller amounts of brush but, it's nothing like a commercial chipper when it comes to handling volume. I do think that the DR is pretty well built and does a good job on smaller tasks. It does require more manual feed time than a self feeding chipper. I sold the 12HP in hopes of finding a bigger one and I am considering the DR 3pt unit. Certainly haven't found anything else in that price range.

I have had the 18 hp electric start, trailerable DR chipper for over two years. Used it today for 4 inch maple and hickory. It has proven itself to be both reliable and economical. I am sure that the 3 pt hitch model would be the same. The advantage of the stand alone model for me has been that I can chip into the FEL and then put the chips where I need them. The disadvantage is that it is another engine to maintain. So far the 18 HP B&S engine has been as reliable as the chipper.

You have to pay for the shipping now ($129 and up), but they are including a 2 year parts and labor warranty and the risk-free trial is now 9 months. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

A less than honorable person could chip a lot of brush in 9 months, and then ship it back for a full refund. It's amazing to me that Country Home Products can offer such a guarantee in this day and age. All their customers must be TBN types. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Guarantees like that are designed to give the buyer confidence and the few that are returned are then sold to people that are more interested in saving $$$$ than having the return privileges or warantee..... usually the used ones cant be returned and carry a shorter warantee..... If I were in the market for one, I would take only a new one because you don't know how the original owner used it. I looked at a tractor this week with 30 hours on it that looked like it wrestled with a glacier and lost...... some people don't have any idea how to treat machinery and abuse it from day one.. If that tractor had been his wife, he would be in jail for abuse!!!!

Thanks for the comments, guys, as I'm planning on getting a BX1800 and would like to replace my MacKissic and Troy Bilt shredders with a 3 pt unit that I can take down the hill and through the woods.

Have you transported this DR chipper over hills and uneven terrain?

I'd be VERY reluctant to do this with either the MacKissic (on front of Gravely) or the Troy Bilt towed behind my Gravely sulky. They're very top heavy AND heavy. They'd probably topple my Gravely.

I transport it up and down hills all the time with no problems as long as I raise the 3 point hitch high enough.

Got one - on an L3410 GST, so pto of 29.5hp and there has not been any engine lugging or signs of strain when I use the unit. It's fine for light to medium duty stuff - 4" is about max. for hard woods, and then the unit "complains" a bit (vibrates, makes a heck of a racket BUT does always cut the stuff up). I use it while my wife, on a FEL platform, trims branches off my oaks and such - as soon as the branches hit the ground, I pick them up and feed them into the DR chipper.
Advantages include price (DR has stuff on perpetual sale) and convenience/utility for modest sized branches. Disadvantages include less than heavy duty construction (see weight, compare with Valby or Woods units, etc), tendency for rust a bit (flywheel and a few other areas), and lack of an intake "feed" (you have to feed stuff down the chute).
When I had a really big pile of branches and small trees, I rented a large Vermeer unit (yup, $250 for a day) with a hydraulic feed and large intake chute, and annihilated the wood pile in 1/2 a day - would have taken many days with the DR, and I would not have been able to handle the 6" stuff. For everyday chipping - DR is great, and convenient (easy to attach to 3ph, and very little that can go wrong with the unit - few parts).
Parting hint - keep the chipper blade sharp.
