Shortcut,

Could you go out and measure the steepest slope in degrees so that we all have a better idea of what you are up against. You can get a simple carpenters protractor level at any home improvement store for $5 or less. Place it on a small flat board (say a foot square piece of plywood) at various spots on your hill and pond banks and keep track of the slopes.

If you find slopes exceeding 20 degrees, you will not be able to use a typical Compact tractor or garden tractor on them. If they are 25 degrees, a DR can do them. If they are more than 25 degrees you will need a special purpose wide stance machine or just plain old spike shoes, a weedeater, and a good breakfast under your belt.

What do you really have?

Shortcut,

I barrowed a bachtold commercial mower (very similar to the DR. but a little better) from my friend. The thing worked really well. I wasn't on really bad slopes but they were still slopes. The whole scenerio must've been pretty funny for my wife and neighbors to watch. Me (pretty small framed) wrestling with this big old mower mowing massive amounts of small alder trees like they were grass. It worked really and was quite a workout. Now that I have my brush hog I'm much happier and the only one laughing is me. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have a question though - wouldn't it be possible for you to go up and down the slope (backwards and forwards) without actually traversing the slope? I have used my tractor on one of my pastures and it is REALLY steep but I just drive up and then back down again and again. Not the speediest way to do it but it keeps the shorts clean.

Howdy,

Before I was convinced to look into tractors, I had intended on purchasing a DR Field & Brush mower with lawn deck attachment. When I asked the operator what would happen if I hit a rock or unseen old fencing, I was told, "It would ruin it." I then asked about a sheer pin or any thing like that and the person didn't think there was one.

It was at that point that I decided to listen to what everyone was telling me and talked to the first tractor dealer.

My dad has the 15 hp Kawasaki model DR, and I've used it a heck of a lot more than Dad has. I've used it mostly at the farm I hunt before I had access to a tractor. The first project was clearing 3 acres of brush with it. After having everything cleared and planted, I used it to mow the plot off several times before gaining access to a tractor/brush hog. It takes a lot of walking, and mowing over yellow jacket nests with it are no fun. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I've used it to mow my pond dam. Mowing side hills is possible. It helps to lock the differential, and it helps to have the size to manhandle the mower. With the diff locked it doesn't like to turn at all though.
