Yeah, you've got to move fast when PTO chippers come on the used market

Roy,
I haven't used my DR chipper much but I plan to set it up to use with my X749 mower. Hope this will help with cleanup work, what are your thoughts?

As long as you realize the DR chipper is for pretty light work (even though it's PTO driven), you should be fine.
As written in an earlier post, I looked at one a few years back...mostly because they're relatively inexpensive. I just did not think they were up to any serious chipping (both in size and duration of the work).
Just my humble opinion...there's folks on TBN who love 'em.

Thanks for the reply Roy,
Out here where I live most of the chipping would be smaller pine branches and juniper branches. We have very little in hardwoods here to deal with so not much of a load on either the tractor or chipper. My chipper has about 12 to 15 hours on it so it is almost new.

you can buy a brand new Wallenstein for about $2900. I'd give the extra $200 over the DR. DR does make some good stuff however.

Not saying my DR chipper is the best by any means, but I have chipped thousands of 4 inch green poles of hardwood that I cut 10 feet long. It was all the limb-wood from 4 inch on down. It chipped all of it with ease, and never complained other than making the tractor puff a little black smoke!

Mine shakes parts loose, but really seems built decent. It "should" smoke the belt before it breaks itself.

The Mac TPH-122 shredder/chipper has a VERY light weight case. Might has numerous little bumps made from stuff inside of it. I try not to stand to the side of it in case it opens up like a tin can.

This is one place where I wish they'd copied TroyBilt. It has a very rugged case. The rotating parts were trash though.

Yeah- and I'm one of them.

"Pretty light work" probably means different things to different folks. I think nothing of feeding my DR chipper a 4" limb or tree, and it just gets down to business chomping it up. The machines's weakness is branches that come off the main stem at an 80 to 90 degree angle and are too stiff to allow the crotch to proceed to the knife. As long as the branching is at a shallow angle, the knife will sever the crotch and munch the branch and main stem without hesitation.

Because its effectiveness varies with the growth structure, my DR works beautifully with oaks, fairly well with maples, and horribly with cedars. Fortunately my property is mostly oak and maple.

Jerry,
I have used the DR chipper on one job since new and found your summation to be well founded. Crotches are an issue with the small throat on this chipper.

My brother bought the DR chipper, MX6 and the Howard 66" tiller new in 2005 but never bought a tractor to use them on. Last year I bought the brushhog and tiller from him for $3000, he added in the chipper for free. So in essence I bought all three new for $3000. In exchange for this deal I can perform any of the tasks he needs at his place.
