I need to smooth out some ruts in my 1500 foot gravel driveway. Its mostly uphill. Unless you turn around. It has corners/ curves and has a bit of crown to it. Its 5/8 minus crushed rock, no potatoes down deeper.
I have a Kioti CK30HST with a 72" RFM which I never want to remove if I don't have to. I was thinking one of those drag behind flat things like you see on ball fields. I've seen some advertised here but don't know the brand---one of them could be turned over to a coarser cutting teeth side.
I was thinking I could raise the mower and use the hitch with a longer chain to pull one of these without mower removal.
My need for driveway/ dirt maintenance would be about twice a year....Mower about 25 times a year.
do these things work ok and who sells 'em??

Yes those things do work and an old set of bed springs works just as good and don't cost nothing.

I purchased mine at the local Kubota dealer and they are called a drag harrow. My unit is 4 piece and measures about 8' x 8'.

As for how they work, it works great. Best implement for the money. You can drag it on pasture grass in the spring and fall to improve growth, smooth out bumps, pot holes & ridges in a gravel drive, final grade on soil to smooth out all the ridges and cover seed on newly planted areas.

You'll love them and they are very HD and will last forever.

Deerlope,
Thank you, you have restored my faith in human nature. Bed springs work great for a lot of ground work and probably does a better job than most implements that cost over $200. I discovered bed springs a couple of years ago and I am truly amazed at what I have accomplished with them. I hit a lot of garage sales in my area and if I find a set of the old type springs at a good price, I buy them. I like to keep a spare on hand. I do get strange looks from my neighbors once in a while though. I like Eddie Walker's log wrapped with cyclone fence too.

When you say bed springs are you talking dragging a box spring around?
Or the guts from the matress??
>>not so serious question>>>>
Should I use twin, queen or king?? LOL

I looked at the price of a drag harrow and quickly decided the 6' wide by 10' long section of chain link fence I had was going to work just fine. The section I had also came with the
3/16 X 3/4 piece of steel at the end for attaching purposes. This was a great thing to hook a chain to for pulliing.

When I wanted a more agressive action I would take a 4" to 6" diameter log the width of the fence section and tie it to the fence about 2 feet back from the front. The nice thing about the fence is it rools up for easy storage when you are done.

At one time I had sevaral 6' lengths of 4" square steel tubing given to me from which I made a heavy duty drag. One side was smooth and the other side I attached some 1/2" diameter rods about 1 1/2" long spaced 2" apart to act as teeth. With this side turned down the teeth dug into the ground cutting off humps and bumps. When pulled on a diagonal you could move material from one side to the other.

You are referring to an inner spring mattress, there is usually a set of box springs that go with it. Thats what we are talking about. Chain link fence works very well also.

Those drag harrows are great. i use one flipped to the least agressive side to bust maneuer clods in the pasture.

TSC has them.. I use an 8x8 heavy one.

Must be a little younger than me. Back in the "olden days" they did not have innerspring mattresses or box springs, they had a well build set of springs sitting on and fastened to six or more 3/16 angle iron pieces. The outside edge was more angle iron that curved on the corners. The top outside was made from rod stock. The mattress sat on top and was packed with cotton. The reason these bed springs are still around is because they were so well made. Don't think they had queen or king sized beds when these springs were made. If you were in a romantic frame of mind you had to be real careful because you could hear the springs squeak from a block away.

Here (hopefully) is a picture from an earlier post of the bed spring that I drag around.
