You guys are great! This skidmate thing is exactly what I need. While the maximum drawbar load on the BX2200 is 550 lbs. The maximum trailer loading weight is 1765 lbs.

As I can't take off my shoes to do the math while I am on the tractor, I will probably have to experiment with how big a log I can skid. If as they claim an ATV can skid 20' 1/2 ton logs using their tool I expect my BX will fare pretty well.

I appreciate all the Web sites and safety advice.

Thanks all!

My Grandfather built roads by dragging logs behind teams of horses.

I wonder how engine horsepower actually relates to real horse power.

I recall from many years ago that a real horse puts out more than one horsepower. Of course, individual results may vary /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif I bet the real horses can really put out the torque though /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Somewhat related: Anyone see the movie where Tim Allen (my hero) and Kirsty Ally masquerade as amish to hide from the law? Neat scene in there where Tim uses his horse to pull a stump. Some Hollywood theatrics, but still pretty neat /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

My dictionary says one Horsepower equals 550 foot pounds per second. If I remember correctly from school one horsepower equals 763 watts of electrical power.

I think torque, traction, and friction are what really count.

hi ya
years and years ago tractors were sold 1 hp = 1 hp i have seen a 18 hp JD chained back to back to a 45-50 hp well lets just say 18 hp was almost real hp's .keep in mind 2 horses pulled a 5 foot mower and 6 pull 2-3 bottom plow but this damm maths come in to it and man found better ways of working out things ,sounds better to have 20-25 hp than 5-6 horse power tho .also years ago afew tractor ad's rated tractors in plow's 1,2,3,4 bottom plows than horse power keep in mind farmers wanted to get work done and it was a term most could get there heads around
catch ya

Find a friend with cutting torches. Get some steel bar and weld to an L shape one side 12" one side 5". On the top of the (12") L have a hole for a shackle. On the 5" side cut to a point with the inside of the L being the knife side. Make a pair of these.

Now with the two Ls turn the insides towards each other. Connect together with a shackle so the Ls scissor together.

Hammer the spiked Ls into the log, attach chain and drag away.

TIP. Use a shackle on the drawbar to drag a log. If you use the 3pt hitch BECARFUL, if you lift the 3pt you can change your center of gravity.

TheBoman,

That description sounds interesting, but it lost me. Do you have a picture?

Are you creating skidding tongs? Like the attachment?

Re: Dragging Trees just like tractor pulling in nz

ya got a loader......no matter what you do they are essential!

if ya having traction problems weight the front of the tractor, (pick up something with the loader) and borrow or buy a 9 hole draw bar and which attaches on the lower links, and hitch it like they do for tractor pulling here in NZ

put the chain through the drawbar and over the 9 hole draw bar (put the linkage arms down below the drawbar).......as you take off once ya moving lift the lift arms to pull pressure down onto the back wheels..the weigh on the front should stop the front lifting.....usually a tractor with 4x4 and loader won't lift anyway (nb. NZ tractor pulling it is illegal to lift the front wheels)

this method although not idiot proof is one i have used for years with minimal fuss......if the chain is short enough or the log is it should lift the front of the log just enough to reduce drag

usually ya either shift what ya want or ya just bury the tractor! if thats the case dig ya self out by pulling ya self out with the crowd on the bucket

another way to shift big logs is, put a fork/pallet fork on the loader, dig under the log....crowd the loader back and go......if traction becomes a issue just lift the log slightly (4x4 essential)

if ya tractor can't shift it.....find a bigger tractor

later

OI you! Get back to work

pudding,

Interesting concept. If you dont have enough weight in the front, however, you would be risking backflip, wouldn't you?
