I want to finish an aditional 1/2 acre which also includes the area over my drain field. The guy that did my drain field likes the idea as it will work better and told me I would not have any troubles with digging the soil up over it as the drain field is 12" deep. What I am wondering is would it be best to take a tiller over it and set it for only 4" deep or would a box blade (if I can adjust the teeth to 4") do a better job. The box blade would be a lot cheaper, Ken from Sweet tractor has quoted me on a good tiller price but if I buy a tiller I know my neighbor will be upset that Ididn't use his. I don't want to use his because there is some rocks in there and I don't want to damage his. I could use the tiller in the future for the garden my wife wants.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd use the tiller and limit the landscaping to a nice crop of grass.

After I installed my drain field I box scraped to get the finish grade, tilled it twice to prepare the seed bed and use the landscape rake to remove any stones and to rake in the grass seed.

Keep this in mind whatever you do... the drainfield was excavated and backfilled... the material over it isn't heavilly compacted....and has already been mixed in the remove/replace process. Light surface prep is probably all that is needed over the drainfield...

Soundguy,

The field is about two years old and your right, I am sure it is pretty loose yet. I am thinking that I could even set a tiller for about 2" of depth in that area and get accomplished what i want to do. The guy that did the drain field is really happy that I am going to plant grass over it rather than the weeds that are there right now. I will make this a fall project, till it up and then spread grass seed using my herdseeder and then drag the seed in. By waiting till fall I don't have to worry about keeping it wet. The seed mixed in and the cooler temps have worked great for me in two other areas on my land.
