Drain oil, hot or cold?

If I recall rightly when there were still Bushpilots during the winter they drained the oil at night and then heated it up before replacing in the morning. :)

Thanks for the tip, it sounds a little bit easier and safer to simply warm up the entire 15 gallons of oil in the oven to 200*F instead of warming up each 5 gallon with a torch to get the oil up to the proper termperature for pouring.

That's fine until something changes. Like Pluto isn't going to be a planet anymore!!!! What's Disney going to do with that dog????

When something is changed by the manufacturer then do what they say. Or experts in the petroleum industry. One post on here had a couple of oil company suggestions. As to Pluto, yes it was decided by vote to reclassify it. The dog is an icon, he is as he is.

Yeah, but some things never change, you still must pass Uranus to get to Pluto no matter what they say..... :D

But I think my manual says to slightly heat the oil so it flows better into the engine. :)

Do you use a convection oven or microwave?

I thought I would include my 2 cent's in this thread. I have a JD 3520 and in the manual the first step in changing oil is to "Run engine to warm the oil". I have always ran my engine's before changing the oil, but on occassions I have not dumped it right away (the drained oil). On those times when the oil has been allowed to set for awhile, when I drain the pan in my barrel there are deposites in the bottom of the pan. For those who believe in changing their oil cold, might I suggest you try it warm, then drian off your pan after it has cooled (say 3-4 hrs) and see whats left in your pan. In my opinion, what you see left in that pan is what will be left in the motor oil pan multiplied by the number of oil changes you do. As far as oil filters are concerned, I don't use Fram. Normally Wix filters are the brand I use.
